How Low Can You Go? Orchid Bamboo Platform Bed

Orchid Bamboo Bed

Have you ever had furniture that was just plain too large for the room it’s in? I have that problem right now, and it is not easy to live with. This is of course, because we bought the furniture years ago when we were in a much larger room. Now that the space has been downsized, I wish I could wave a magic wand to make the furniture smaller too.

Here’s  a general decorating tip for you: Never underestimate the power of using furniture that is the right scale for your room.

My current decorating dilemma has led me to seek out stylish furniture on a smaller scale: platform beds, wall shelves insted of nightstands, etc. The Orchid platform bed is just low and simple enough to satisfy our current needs, not to mention it’s also green. I love platform beds because they come with slats and don’t require a box spring, eliminating layers of bulk that would contribute to the stuffiness. And because it is available in both light and dark woods, you can choose whichever suits your existing decor.

If we can get $1500 for our current bedroom set on Craigslist, I think an Orchid may be in our future :)

Why It’s Green:

  • Made of Moso bamboo, one of the hardest, most durable bamboo species
  • Retailer donates 2% of all proceeds to green causes

Price: $1500

I LOVE THAT BED! I need a new bed so badly… this is beautiful and exactly what I’m looking for… now, is it a king size?

@Monica It appears that it comes in only one size, and that size is Queen. Sorry :(

i love platform beds- but could not afford a frame and wanted to keep my boxspring. SO- my father actually MADE my frame to look like a platform bed (with a hidden bottom area for the boxspring!). He made it out of extra wood he had at home and it looks beautiful. Even if i were to buy the (reclaimed) wood materials, having someone with some carpentry skills around could definitely build one for cheaper than 1500$. AND you get to keep your boxspring! :)

@Lisa Wow! That really makes me wish I knew someone that handy. Unfortunately, neither my hubby nor I count carpentry as one of our given talents. As for the boxspring, I actually kind of want to get rid of it :)

Here’s another option for a beautiful bamboo bed from a friend of mine at Tassajara Designs in Carlsbad, CA.

These guys do nice work in bamboo. Their unique beds are all made in the U.S.A.
