My daughter has a very active imagination. Her 3-year-old mind often comes up with fantastic, intriguing stories that never cease to amaze me. This year, I plan on giving her only gifts that will help her learn or grow in some way, and I’d love to give her something that continues to encourage that imagination of hers.
The Cardboard Playhouse from Natural Pod is the answer. Made of recycled cardboard, it is very literally a blank canvas waiting for her to turn it into her dream house. Lately, my daughter has been in the “Mommy, can I have one of those” phase every time she sees a commercial for some new-fangled, cheap, plastic toy she sees on TV. This ought to satisfy those desires for a while.
Considering that space is a serious commodity in our new digs, I love that the playhouse can fold flat for storage, optimally under her bed or behind her headboard. She also loves sitting in boxes, though its been a while since we’ve had one big enough for her to sit in comfortably. This will be the box of her dreams, and her crayons and watercolors will never know what hit them. In fact, I just may get in on the decorating action too. After all, you know how much I love to decorate — and the evidence is the image above. The house on the left is my doing. Maybe some of my design geekiness will rub off on my daughter while we’re painting flower boxes under the windows
And if you’re looking for natural toys for the kids on your wish list, Natural Pod has lots of other options, mostly made of natural wood and cardboard and all designed to stimulate kids’ minds. For littles with more active imaginations, you can opt for the cardboard rocket instead of the house.

I love the idea of these cardboard playhouses. I plan to get one for my daughter when it warms again. She’s 3 and will love playing house in it and decorating it.
