As much fun as I have recycling everything in my home from plastic food packaging to cereal boxes and glass bottles, I can’t help thinking I could probably find ways to reuse those items before I recycle. Unfortunately, my imagination often doesn’t take me much further than that. Thankfully, there are many, many people and companies out there that are more creative than I am. The ReMake It! Glass Bottle Lamp is a functional solution.
All you have to do is save six 12 oz. glass soda or beer bottles, clean and dry them and hang them inside the kit’s wire frame. If you know someone who drinks a lot of beer or soda, this would be an awesome gift that will encourage them not only to recycle, but to repurpose items that they would normally throw away.
As for style, I’m not sure I’d want it in my living room unless I found some beautiful bottles, but it would be great in a den, lounge or basement. I wouldn’t recommend it for kids unless they are old enough to know not to mess with it once its put together. But for teens, it is a cool hands-on, DIY project.
Still, it is a great concept, and the creator, RePlayGround, also has several other kits if the lamp isn’t quite your speed. You can also snag a Wine Cork Trivet kit, a Magazine Envelope kit, or a Bottle Cap Magnet kit, all between $5.50 and $12.99 apiece. Green and affordable? Sounds like a great gift to me.
Why It’s Green:
- Requires you to recycle glass bottles to complete the kit
- Compatible with a CFL (compact fluorescent light bulb)
Who Would Like It:
- Anyone who likes to drink soda or beer
- Teenagers
Price: $40. You do have to add your own bottles.
