ElevenMoms, SxSW and How You Can Help End Hunger

by jennae on March 6, 2009

hungerpledgeI wanted to give everyone a quick update on what has been going on with the ElevenMoms, since it’s been a while since I’ve written specifically about what we’re up to.

1. SxSW

sxsw-logoNext week, most of us will be traveling to Austin, TX for South by Southwest Interactive (SxSW), a conference about all things online and interactive that will serve as an excellent networking and learning opportunity for me and all the other moms.  I will be there from March 13-17, and I promise to bring back photos and video. I’m lining up some great guest bloggers while I’m gone, so Green Your Decor won’t miss a beat.

In addition to Walmart, most of us have other sponsor companies. Mine is Kelloggs, and I’m waiting to learn about all of their sustainability initiatives. I hear they are making some great green moves, and I will be sure to share them once I find out the details.  My family does eat a lot of Kelloggs cereal, so I’d really love to hear what they are doing to make their products, and company as a whole, easier on the Earth.

NOTE TO COMPANIES: For any other potential sponsors who are reading this, I really need a laptop to take with me, as mine is so ancient that I’m afraid to travel with it for fear it will fall apart in transit. I’m not over-exaggerating. So if you make a green laptop, feel free to contact me about a sponsorship :)

2. Pledge to End Hunger with Tyson

A big part of going green is social responsibility and helping others when we can. If you want to help, but you’re not able, this is a great opportunity for you to do your part, and all it takes is your pledge.

The Pledge to End Hunger is a campaign for which Tyson will donate 35 lbs. of food (which is equivalent to 140 servings) to Capital Area Food Bank of Texas in Austin during the SxSW Interactive. Do the math. If 1,000 people pledge, that’s 140,000 servings of food going out to the people who need it most.

You can make a pledge by:

  • Using the share function on the website.
  • Following @HungerPledge on Twitter for updates and use #HungerPledge with your tweets.
  • Write a blog post about Pledge to End Hunger.
  • Email the link to your colleagues, family, & friends.
  • Join the Pledge to End Hunger Facebook cause.
  • Embed the Pledge to End Hunger Tally widget on your website, blog, or MySpace account.

Help us feed as many people as we can!

3. Earth month

For Earth month (yes, a whole month, not just a day), we will be getting some great green products to review, and there may be some surprises in store for my readers. I am very conscientious about reviewing products that are truly green and telling you the good and the bad, so look forward to those. We’re all also planning to make videos with truly green money-saving tips, which I know all of you will be glad to hear. I have some great ideas up my sleeve. Who knows? I might just be a You Tube star in the making! I’ll let you know when the videos are up.

This is just a small part of the green efforts Walmart is making. Some people might say it isn’t enough, but I say it’s a step in the right direction, and I look forward to encouraging the company to do more and do better.

4. Smart phones

The ElevenMoms have also been tasked with evaluating the process of buying a smart phone from Walmart. We have three choices: an iPhone, T-Mobile’s G-1 and the Blackberry Storm. I personally plan to get an iPhone because I’m a Mac girl at heart and I love the fact that Apple is doing a lot to make their products greener, including allowing you to recycle old gadgets for free.

From what I understand, there’s a lot more to come from the ElevenMoms, and not just on the part of Walmart. This amazing group of ladies is getting the attention of local and national media, and I’m so happy to be a part of it.
