Great Green Giveaway for Earth Month

by jennae on April 14, 2009

earthmonth-giveawaySince I joined Walmart‘s ElevenMoms waaay back in October, there is no time that I have been prouder of the sustainability efforts the retail giant is making than this month — Earth Month. While many of their previous efforts toward sustainability have been behind the scenes — like switching to hybrid delivery trucks and requiring stricter sustainability standards for their suppliers — the changes are finally starting to show up on store shelves. Starting this month, you can find everything from soy candles to organic cotton bedding, dish cloths and towels made of recycled fibers, and even storage bins made of recycled plastic. Though I have some questions about the manufacturing process of these products, I am hopeful about what this means for Walmart, and I’ve made it clear that I hope these products remain on shelves long after April 30.

We ElevenMoms had the opportunity to try out many of these new sustainable products, and one lucky reader will get to take home a prize package containing several of these products. The prize package will include:

Bissell Little Green: This is a compact, but powerful carpet and upholstery cleaner made with recycled plastic content and featuring minimal, fully recyclable packaging, and PVC-free tanks and hose. If you’re stuck with indoor-air-polluting carpet like we are, you want a machine that will deep clean said carpet when you need to. It did a great job removing stains that had long since set and refreshing entire rooms. It’s not quite as effective as renting a good old-fashioned steam cleaner, but it did its job well. Price: $74.88

Brita Digital Filter Pitcher: If you still need help breaking your addiction to bottled water, this pitcher should do the trick. I stopped drinking bottled water a long time ago, so on the very rare occasion that I do drink it, I can literally taste the plastic. No plastic taste here. Some people will say that a filter made of plastic isn’t exactly dark green, and I tend to agree. However, if it stops one reader from buying bottled water, it will have done it’s job. It also includes a digital indicator that shows when the filter needs to be changes, approximately every 2 months. Price: $34.98

White Cloud Green Earth paper towels and toilet paper: We don’t buy or use paper towels at all, but I realize not everyone is as hardcore green as I force my family to be :)   I still will first recommend ditching disposables in favor of kitchen towels and cloth napkins, but if you are going to buy paper towels, you should aim to buy it with 100% recycled content. And as for toilet paper? I am adamantly against the clear-cutting of old-growth trees for a purpose as inglorious as toilet paper.  Recycled toilet paper is the old way to go if you’re trying to be green. It has a notorious reputation for being hard and scratchy. I can honestly say that of all the brands of recycled TP I have tried, White Cloud Green Earth is easily the softest.

GreenWorks Cleaners: Over the past year or so, I have tried a variety of methods for chemical-free cleaning, from vinegar, lemon juice and peroxide to eco-friendly cleaning products. This isn’t my first experience with GreenWorks, which made by Clorox and endorsed by the Sierra Club.  This stuff just works. The all-purpose cleaner cuts through soap scum with ease, the dishwashing liquid cleans even the toughest dishes and the biodegradable wipes are the only cleaning wipes I’ll even consider buying. I wish I knew more about all the exact ingredients, but I definitely know these products will work on your tough cleaning jobs.

WANT TO WIN?

I’m going to make it easy on you. Leave a comment telling me which product from the prize package you need most and why, and tell me how you and your family are going green. Comments that do not include both parts will be disqualified. Do this by 11:59 p.m. EST on Thursday, April 30, 2009, to enter.

I would like the green works cleaners. It’s hard to find a healthy cleaner with no harsh chemicals in it. It’s also hard to be able to afford the good ones. I’ve never been able to try green works but I’ve heard that it works really well. Me and my family are going green by starting our own garden with our own compost. We also reuse our old clothes for things like dust rags and quilt patches.

Hi! It is just my 18 month old daughter and I and we are both working on turning over our lives to going green! We would really appreciate the bissell vacuum so we could afford to get rid of our big lug of a vacuum that I am sure sucks up more energy than it does dirt! My daughter and I moved to the city recently and our allergies are just worse than ever, hopefully an earth friendly vacuum might help both our home and our allergies! We currently use all recycled paper products, and any glass jars (IE: jelly, sauce, etc) are washed out and reused for anything from pen holders to cute cotton ball holders in the bathroom. We also only use our dishwasher and only run it when it is completely full and only once a day (if it is full by then) …we also use old receiving blankets and torn shirts for rags instead of paper towels. We have purchased the recycled bags at each of our favorite stores to shop at and leave them in the car so we can bring them in when we shop to take our goodies home in. Thank you !

I need that Bissell! With two black labs in an apartment we have to keep the carpets clean and it is a LOT of work! That would be a great way to do it and avoid harsh chemicals that are not only bad for the environment, but bad for us and the dogs, as well!

Hi I could really make use of the Bissle Little Green. Between my husband, 18 month old son, myself & our assorted pets our carpets take a beating. We as a family are doing our best to green out lives. We have eliminated harsh toxic chemical cleansers from our home. We are planting a vegetable garden that’s being fertilized by our own compost. My son loves to “help” in the garden so mud gets brought into the house. To also help with keeping our food suply local we keep two hens who provide more than enough eggs for our small family. We also visit our local farmers market to support our local growers. We dry our laundry outside in the sun on our rotating clothesline & only wash on cold to use less electricity, when there is a full load so that we conserve water as well. When we first bought our home two years ago we went through the house & switched every bulb to CFL. We live in Florida so the heat gets to us but through autumn & spring we try to not run the air conditioning. We save & recycle all that we can. We have & use cloth bags for shopping. I know there is more we can do but at least we have a good start. I think the most important thing is that we are teaching our son to conserve and protect the earth as well.

Oh Man! I need that Bissell Little Green cleaner.

We have a cat and a miniature dachshund. Charlie (the little weenie) likes to think of our spare room as his indoor washroom. It’s the only place in the apartment that he goes to the washroom in, somehow he has convinced himself that this is indeed his indoor place to go. We now have a baby gate up to keep him out of there, but the carpet still has a few *ahem* spots on it that won’t come clean. ew, i know.

The way that my husband and I are becoming greener are a few things. We have almost all our light bulbs switched over to energy efficient ones, ( we’re waiting for the last few old ones to burn out). We are also signed up for a community garden this summer to be able to grow our own veggies, and we tend to be great recyclers of old furniture (let’s just say I love to check out the curbside on garbage night) I’ve brought home more than one dresser or chair to give a new coat of paint to!

yay!

Happy Earth Day everyone!
I already have the Bissel cleaner, I bought it a couple months ago to clean up after my puppy. Ever since our light bill started going up, we decided to do as much as we could to lower our eco-footprint. All our lights are CFLs, we make sure all lights are off and most appliances and electronics are unplugged and we always have a list of what we have/need in our fridge so we don’t leave it open too long. The product we are interested in is the pitcher. We are guilty of still buying bottled water every couple months. It would be wonderful to take another step towards going green! C. Reyes

I need the Bissell because we have thick carpets and 3 cats! Our green steps include buying more food in bulk and avioding anything that is overly packaged. Next up is reducing paper towel use!

oh my gosh. do i ever need that bissel.
although we have mostly hardwood in our apartment, the large area rugs we do have accumulate SO much dirt, and as i can’t afford a vacuum cleaner right now, we are currently using a LINT ROLLER to clean our rugs!! this is just totally inefficient and definitely not green – something which i’m dying to change.
we have been going green lately, substituting vinegar and lemon for harsh cleaning chemicals, as well as adjusting our water volumes in the shower, tending happy little plants, and using energy friendly bulbs. please help!

I would love to have the Bissell – we have constant traffic in our house (all those teenagers) and two dogs…it would be heaven to be able to spot clean the furniture and carpets without having to rent a steamer! Over the last several years we have made progress in the green dept. We do the usua, l changed our bulbs, e-mail bills and pay on-line, canvas shopping bags, we have recycled for about 11 years, we have a compost, I use GREEN cleaning supplies, we use towels instead of paper towels..We still need work but the more you do, the more it becomes habit.

Definitely the product from the package that I need most is the recycled paper toilet paper. Why? I’m pregnant, and you go through a lot of paper peeing every 5 minutes. :)
Our biggest effort to going green this year is starting our own garden. It’s a little daunting, with not much experience, and a baby on the way, but we’re excited about it!
As an aside, I completely agree with you on the paper towels. I wish my husband wouldn’t use them!

I could really use the carpet & upholstery cleaner. My living room furniture and bedroom carpet both need cleaned and if I won this, we would not have to rent one of those big cleaners.

We do lots of tings to be green.

All our light bulbs throughout the house save one are CFLs
We shred newspapers and junk mail and use three shred for garden mulch.
We save our vegetable scraps for compost.
We buy local vegetables as much as possible.
We use naturally based cleaners and pesticides and never, ever, ever use herbicides in our yard and gardens.
We belong to an online group (freecycle) that helps us to find new homes for “things” that we no longer want rather than send them to the landfill. (Anything and everything from building supplies to clothes to appliances to toys to clothes to dishes to …)
We buy clothing and household items at thrift stores and donate many of our own no longer used items to our favorite thrift store.
We keep the temperature in the house below 68 F. in the winter
We use special shades on the windows to help reduce heating up the house from the sun in summer.

And I know there are other things that don’t come to mind right now but those are a good start. :-)

Definitely the Bissell Little Green is a desired gadget. I have pets, and said pets leave messes and dander on the carpet & furniture, so the Little Green would help keep the environment easier to breathe. I am constantly coming up with new ways to keep it Green, and one of them is using vinegar as my kitchen sink cleaner – instead of the old fashioned way of leaving bleach & water in the sink to clean it, I just use vinegar and water to do the dirty job.

With two active girls and a husband, they always seem to be spilling things all over the carpet, which is throughout the house. My family and I are going green by using energy efficient light bulbs throughout the house, recycling everything we can and trying to use as many “green” cleaners as possible. My hubby and I have already switched to compact flourescent light bulbs, bring our own reusable bags to the store, use alternative transportation to go to work, compost, reclaim rainwater, and grow a lot of our own fruits and veggies, so switching to green cleaning products is the next step for us in our quest to be greener.

I would like the Brita Digital Filter Pitcher. I use tap water all the time but perhaps I should consider a filtration system as sometimes things do go awry with water treatment centres. Rare – but it does happen.

My family and I have a small collection of aluminum water bottles we use instead of buying plastic ones. The water tastes so much fresher without the plastic – it’s so true!

I would LOVE to have the Little Green Machine! I have a dog, a husband that does landscaping, and a child-soccer player, which means my carpets always need attention! I would love a green, safe way to keep them clean! My family is going green in a number ways. We are planting more veggies for our own use, and buying from local farmer’s markets instead of needing to buy foods transported into our area. We’re also unplugging unused appliances, recycling cans, cardboard and paper, and hanging our clothes up to dry instead of using our electric clothes dryer.

My family desperately needs the Brita pitcher! We live in a dinky town and our water comes from a community well, and, well…it’s terrible! We buy our bottled water by the gallon and reuse the jugs as much as possible, but it would be sooo much better for the environment if we didn’t have to do that! We’ve taken many steps toward going green recently. A few of them include, ditching paper towels and using rags and clothes instead, using the “curly” energy efficient light bulbs and planting our own organic garden. Our utility bill went from an average of $260 a month to only $78.00 in our effort to conserve energy! I’m so very proud of that.

I need the bissell little green. I have 4 messy little boys plus dogs, birds and lizards and all them take their turn making a mess. We have been going green for the new year. We have been toting our go green bags whenever we go shopping, buying energy efficiant appliances and light bulbs. Wasting less energy, water and food. Every year we grow a garden our selves. Plus my boys pick up trash everyday after school on their way home or to the babysitters. We recyle and reuse. I have found lots of creative ways to recycle pop bottles amoung other things.

Hello, I am very interested in the bissell little green. My son and I were both recently diagnosed with severe allergies and asthma. We have been pulling up the carpets in most of the house but in a few rooms the floors are too destroyed to get rid of the rugs. I have tried to clean them but it is to no avail. I use the white vinegar and water solution so I am not using chemicals but the stains are still there.
We have a water trap system for our rain water to irrigate our lawn and garden, we use only vinegar when cleaning and are trying as many small things as we can. All the light bulbs have been changed to energy efficiant ones too, and we use only refilable bottles for water so that we are not using plastic bottles.. Thank you for considering anyone for all these amazing items.

I want that Bissell little green! I have 2 toddlers, 2 dogs, 3 cats and 4 visiting kittens…. It would come in so handy in the many “mishaps” we have throughout our days. Our family has been going green for a few years now. I am a big recycler and collect recyclables from the alley and from friends that don’t have recycle programs in the area. I also have built my own veggie garden from recycled materials and reuse everything I possibly can instead of buying new. We make all efforts to fix things instead of unloading it and buying another. I also freecycle to many rather than send anything to a landfill. I love GREEN!

The Bissell little green! Oh my, how my carpet and furniture could use that!
My family is going green by cutting out most paper products (and using recycled for the must-haves like TP.) Also, composting, gardening, canning, etc. etc…

Looks like i mostly need the Brita Digital Filter Pitcher. I drink so much water its crazy. Epically now that im pregnant. I cant stand the taste of tap water. I have to choke it down. Yuck! And all the icky chemicals. No thank you. Prob not good for baby. Bottle water is tasty but not an option.
I have recently started living greener. I use vinegar, baking soda, borax, and lemon juice almost daily. I have been acquiring more house plants. I have planted trees! I recycle of course. And now im trying my hand at a bigger “green” event. A baby shower.
So thats my story.
Thank you!

I need the Bissel little green the most. I have a dog who sheds like crazy. And though I’m currently pretty green using my broom and own energy to clean up his fur, it’s difficult and seemingly neverending. I sweep and two minutes later balls of fur are in my sight again.

I’m interested in the Brita pitcherI don’t like the taste of our water and I like how it tells when the filter needs to be changed. I’m trying to go green I recycle and compost. changed my lightbulbs, use tote bags, wash in cold water and during summer hang the clothes outside to dry

I need the Bissel Spot Cleaner because I am a Klutz and drip coffee on the carpet when I carry my coffee mug up and down the carpeted stairs! The way my family is going green is that we concetrate on reducing waste by buying products with less packaging and finding a new reuse for worn out items, like turning old t-shirts into a quilt, instead of throwing them in the trash.

I would like to win the Bissell Little Green carpet and upholstery cleaner. With two grandsons who are forever wiping their hands on the furniture and a dog that is always shedding and loves to roll on the carpet or rub against the furniture this would help with cleanups.
We have about a dozen cloth bags we use for everything we buy instead of getting plastic bags from the store. We recycle everything, use a composter and we have two clothes lines outside as well as a wooden clothes rack inside. We have also replaced all our light bulbs including all our Christmas lights with environmentally friends ones. As towels become frayed and start to wear, the bigger ones are donated to the SPCA to be used to dry animals after their baths. Smaller ones are kept for clean ups around the home. Blades on the lawnmower have been raised, so the grass in not cut as short which keeps it greener and requires less watering.

I so would love to have the Bissell Little Green. I have two tweens a new little dog and children are constantly sleeping over. We are going green by turning off the lights & tv when leaving a room, turning off the water while brushing our teeth, we recycle any and everything, replaced our light bulbs with more effecient ones.

I really need the Brita Digital Filter Pitcher Because in my efforts to become more Earth friendly I have VOWED to stop buying bottled water! I am a HUGE water drinker and I need CLEAN water! This is a must for me! I love water and I drink at least 2 L a day!

My family and I are going green in a number of ways.. we are recycling like BANSHEES! we even check on each other to make sure we don’t slip up!

We walk or bike instead of drive when we can!
We purposely look for products with less packaging!
I have started “doing” my windows and glass with an old trick my mom taught me.. in a spray bottle mix white vinegar with some water… spray on windows and glass and get this… dry off with NEWSPAPER… it works so much better than paper towel!!!!

My favorite product of the giveaway would be the Bissell Little Green, because I have a 2 year old and this would work great for all those little messes that she makes. I am working on becoming more green using baby steps…we use reusable grocery bags at the store, Keep the lights off when they are not needed, and learning so many more things that a person can do. What a great giveaway Thank You

I am a subscriber. I would like the Bissell Little Green Machine. I need something to clean my upholstery. I already use the Brita filter, I also compost, recycle and have a garden. I had a solar hot water boiler installed and it has cut my oil consumption by almost half! I also have started a worm composting bin in the kitchen. I was a bit nervous about having critters in the house, but so far so good…

We need the Brita filter pitcher the most, because we really want to drink more water (instead of all the sodas/sugary juices we drink), but the tap water in our city is really not good, so this would be the best thing to have rather than getting bottled water!

We try to help the environment by using reusable tote bags at the store instead of plastic bags and recycling whatever we can.

I most need the Bissell Little Green Steam cleaner and uposltery cleaner. I am a mom of three teen boys. They are runners and my furniture ends up with stinky boys and my poor carpets get so filthy. I have read rave eviews of the Bissell little green and think it would be an invaluable tool.
We are going green in several ways. We belong to a CSA, we have the lowest flow faucets and shower heads that ca be found (not in stores-yet), we wash our laundry on cold, use eco friendly detergents and cleaners, recycle, do not subscribe to newspapers, use all CFL and only turn lights one when absolutely needed.

Brita Digital Filter Pitcher definitely. Our icemaker has broken (just after the warranty ended no doubt). So we can’t get our filtered water from the fridge and right now we can’t afford to get it fixed or install any type of new filter at the sink supply. So we’re stuck for a while.

We recycle, compost and reuse anything we can as often as we can. We have cut down on paper products and casual water usage. We just take it one day at a time.

We live in a city that is dedicated to reducing landfill contributions and it is hard not to be green…friends, family and community members are always talking garbage…but in a nice way!!

I would like the Bissell little green the most. My daughter suffers from allergies and we need to keep our carpets clean to help her to breathe easier. We have the green works cleaners already and love that they do not have any harsh chemicals that would harm our planet, and cause her to have coughing attacks or make it hard for her to breathe in the house. Since changing our cleaning products, she is able to be in the room while we are cleaning. It doesnt affect her at all! Hopefully the little Bissell would help keep the dirt and dander from her carpets and help make her room cleaner and safer for her to be in.

Bissell Little Green is what I need most. I was hoping to get some money back from taxes and of course I already had it spent on a new couch, love seat and lounge chair. Well that fell through, so until I can save up I am stuck with my old furniture from college that has been through 4 moves and put up with 2 dogs and 4 cats. Now I can really forget about replacing the carpet. So the the Little Bissell would go along way to keep my hanging on!!!

Our main plan of attack is Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. We also compost and we only use reusable shopping totes.

I love all of the products but especially the Brita pitcher. DH is allergic to chlorine so we boil water for him and this would be much easier. And I like that it tells you when to replace the filter.
We already recycle, use CFL bulbs, carpool to work, take reuseable bags to the market, buy local produce at our farmers market, stopped using paper towels and paper napkins, and have planted our first veggie garden.
Thanks for the chance to win!

With three rescued MinPins running around my house every day, and temporary fosters passing through from time to time, my house always has messes to be cleaned up – from dirty paw prints to slobber spots when my youngest makes a puddle on the kitchen floor with the water from the drinking bowl because she puts her head all the way down in the bowl and comes up spluttering and spraying water out of her nose… it’s a sight to see. Then there are my three kids (two step and one adopted-by-love) and the hubby. It’s a house full – of messes and love – and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I’m a volunteer with an environmental protection group so my family is very green oriented. We’ve already switched to energy saving bulbs, and a mulching mower; and we’ve started recycling and are using a rain barrel to gather water for watering the plants and washing the car. I’ve started carrying reusable bags to the grocery store and we’ve even started switching to as many natural and recycled products as possible. I believe that in order to have a beautiful world tomorrow, you have to take steps to protect it today and I’m teaching that lesson to my kids and my husband.

I am really impressed with what I have read about the green works cleaners, and would love to give them a try, (the All Purpose one in particular for soap scum). I have always relied on the heavy chemical cleaners despite my allergies to them, such as hives and asthma while using them, simply because I didn’t think ‘natural’ type cleaners could really do the job. Thanks to my son, we separate our garbage and grow a lovely large garden, so this is just one more thing we can do to help both us and the planet. Thanks for sharing!
