Half Dollar Butterfly Chair by Johnny Swift

Half Dollar Butterfly Chair by Johnny Swift - detail

Typically, I don’t present products that are conceptual or not widely available. On occasion I’ll break that rule, but only when the product is unique or stunning enough to warrant my doing so. (Remember the Spectacle Chandelier?) Well, this product definitely qualifies.

The Half Dollar Butterfly Chair by Johnny Swing is nothing less than a modern marvel. The curved form of the chair is stunning, but what is really remarkable is the media used to create it: all-but-obsolete half dollars. Talk about repurposing! The chair is was made with 1,500 half dollars and 7,000 welds. Can you imagine the painstaking detail and dedication that went into making this? Swing is a master at repurposing items to create the almost unimaginable — he also created a pillow made of dollar bills.

I won’t chance a guess at the asking price, but considering this chair cost, at the very least, $750 to make, I think it’s safe to say it won’t be on your list of bargain buys. And if you think this is incredible, you’ll definitely want to see the nickel sofa — that one cost at least $350. Do the math.

Why It’s Green:

  • Repurposes nearly-obsolete currency in a completely unexpected way
  • Handmade
