Last year, my husband and I went to a local Christmas tree farm to cut down our own tree. This year, however, we live in a different city, and the farm that is closest to us ran out of trees really early. The next nearest farm was a half hour away via the Interstate, and the idea of lugging a tree on top of our tiny Honda Accord for a half hour didn’t sit well with us. So we got real tree from Whole Foods instead. I was hoping we could find a retailer selling Georgia trees, but EVERY retailer we asked had had their trees delivered from farms in North Carolina. Not quite “local,” but apparently as good as it was going to get. And a real tree, as a general rule, is better than a fake one — particularly if it comes from a tree farm where the trees are replanted every year.
My husband picked the tree all by his lonesome, and I was really impressed with his choice. The tree is full and fragrant, and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. Of course, it takes up quite a bit of space in our living room, but I still love it!
As you can see, I had to improvise some orange ornaments, since I couldn’t find any anywhere. And I still have a few ideas up my sleeve, since the think the tree still needs “something.” The tree is so huge that our small collection of ornaments feels sparse to me. So this afternoon, we’re collecting pine cones and a couple of other items for some ornament making! I’ll share the results!
I want to feature you!
I’d love to see photos of your Christmas trees, all decked out. If you submit a photo of your tree, along with a brief description (and a link back to your site, if you have one), I’ll post all the photos I receive on Friday. I can’t wait to see what you’ve done!
THE DECORATE GREEN SERIES
I have a confession to make: I generally do very little decorating for the holidays outside of our Christmas tree. It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s just that having lived in a series of apartments and other people’s homes for most of my adult life has made me less than enthusiastic about spending a lot of time on my holiday decor. This year though, I plan to do more holiday decorating, both inside and out. How much more, I don’t know, but I’ll share stylish, eco-friendly ideas with you as I refine my plan. Come back often to see what the Decorate Green series has in store for you!
