Jennae, I love your website, as much for the beautiful eye you have for decorating as for your choice of green products. I, unfortunately, cannot afford most of the things featured here, but the idea of buying used still has me nervous. I don't want to get someone's used crib with toxic paint on it, or other used furniture that may have particle board, formaldehyde, etc. Any advice on that?

@Diane You definitely make a good point. The Green Rooms in a Box series assumes you are buying from scratch and buying new products in order to provide access for any shopper to buy them. But I definitely encourage any eco-savvy decorator to start first in their own home trying to find items in other rooms that can be repurposed. Then look for used items that are in good condition, though you sometimes have to be careful with nursery products like cribs, bouncers, etc. to make sure they are up to current safety recommendations. If you are on a budget, these two strategies are definitely the way to go to save some money.

Good ideas. For the equipment, I usually started with gently used products: my kids' crib came from my best friend, who loaned it when her kids were done. The changing table came from a yard sale. The cloth diapers were hand-me-downs, too! It's easy to "decorate" cheaply when you start with recycled goods.
