Add Little Green Spice: Wood Salt + Pepper Shakers

Wood Salt + Pepper Shakers

My husband thinks I’m crazy, but I mean it when I say you can find a greener alternative to almost any product on the market — from underwear to light bulbs and everything in between. So I try my best not to buy any new products without first investigating whether I can find one that is easier on the Earth.

Case in point: Most people probably wouldn’t think twice about buying salt and pepper shakers made of plastic. But not me. I want something else. Maybe handmade ceramic or recycled glass. Or even better, reclaimed wood and natural cork like this pair from Branch home. They are definitely not your mother’s shakers.  They are cute and curvy, with a shape that is reminiscent of a rocket — or some other similarly-shaped object for those whose minds are in the gutter.

The point is that you can find green alternatives to almost anything — you just have to be willing to look.

Why It’s Green:

  • Salt shaker is made from reclaimed poplar wood and treated with a low-VOC milk paint
  • Pepper shaker is made from reclaimed walnut wood
  • Use natural cork stoppers
  • Handmade in the U.S.

Price: $48
