At the moment, I’m not a fan of spending a lot of time in the bathroom. At one time, it was one of my favorite places to “get away” from everyone. I could go in there, close the door and be alone. But when your bathroom is as boring and utilitarian as mine was, spending time there gets really old really fast. You may already be familiar with Ecoist, a green brand well known for its handbags, all made of upcycled candy wrappers, chip bags and other packaging. With their new Snowjob chair, they have taken the same concept to the next level!

The chair, designed by Emiliano Godoy, has a frame made of FSC-certified wood and features a vegetable based, biodegradable finish. A cover, woven of small pieces of post-industrial waste from the candy wrapping industry, then slips over the frame to create the Ecoist handbag look many people know so well (bags are shown below).

The company collects candy labels that are misprinted or feature incorrect or obsolete information, and cuts them into small sections. The labels are then folded into rectangular pieces and joined to create the cover. Of course, I couldn’t help but wonder how sturdy a chair made of candy wrappers could be. Thankfully, Ecoist adds internal reinforcement made from post-consumer recycled paper to add rigidity, so it should be safe for sitting.

The price isn’t quite as attractive as the chair itself, but if I had unlimited money at my disposal, I could easily see 6 of these around a tulip table in a minimalist, modern dining room.

I’ve been aware of Structured Green for nearly as long as I’ve been publishing Green Your Decor. I’ve even been able to see one of their immaculate pieces in person, thanks to the green show home I toured in Marietta back in 2009. The company is a maker of sustainable furniture that is based right here in Georgia, and their stuff is impressive. A few days ago, I ventured over to their site just to see if there was anything new. And hello! I was blown away by their newest table designs.

The Night Light table is a work of art, in my humble opinion. The Structured Green team used a pixellated photograph of the United States taken from the space station to create the design, which features the light signatures of America’s major cities. And did I mention the table is available in three different kinds of FSC-certified wood? I am literally swooning.

The Scatter Table is equally as gorgeous. In Structured Green’s words, the Scatter Table was “made for messiness.” It features a design reminiscent of a game of Pick Up Stix gone perfectly awry.

And finally, the Spider table illustrates Boston’s MBTA subway lines. But even if you’re not from Boston, you’ll be able to appreciate this gorgeous design. And to top it off, Structured Green can custom build your table with any metro or mass transit system you want. It is made of natural Bamboo ply, but it can be made with any wood combination.

These tables are definitely investment-level pieces, not for the faint of heart when it comes to pricing. But I think they’re absolutely worth the prices.

Shiner Furniture at the Foundary

Deal sites are popping up everywhere these days — hence the format change on the Green Your Decor coupons page. Today, I discovered a new one: The Foundary. They exclusively sell beautiful housewares, from furniture to bedding, tableware and more. While not all of the companies featured specifically make green products, all of them were selected with quality and longevity in mind. In other words, you’re going to find quality pieces.

Today though, you can get sustainable pieces from Atlanta furniture maker Shiner Furniture. Shiner makes unique, modern furniture from recycled and reclaimed materials and sustainably harvested wood. They also have a couple of great pieces made from cardboard. Given that they are made by a local artist, I have had my eye on Shiner for a while. I’ve noticed that a lot of people wind up at Green Your Decor looking for eco-friendly sofas and chairs — particularly ones that are priced reasonably. The problem is that pretty much all the ones I’ve written about in the past no longer are for sale. So here’s a roundup of some reasonably- and not-so-reasonably-priced eco-friendly sofas and chairs, in order of price. Some are greener than others as well, so be sure to read the descriptions. As a general rule, the more expensive options will have more eco-friendly qualities than the lower-priced ones.

West Elm’s Henry Sofa, $699-849. Frame constructed from sustainably harvested hardwood, pillow fibers are created from recycled water bottles, springs constructed of 70% recycled high-gauge steel, foam in cushions and arms is made from 20% soy-based materials, padding and fiber on the seat is constructed using recycled carpet materials, and made in the USA in west elm’s own FSC-certified factory. Available in cotton and linen/cotton blend fabrics, though none are organic.

West Elm’s Linden Sofa & Chair, $899 (sofa) or $1379 (for the pair). FSC-certified wood frame and legs, fabric is 100% recycled cotton a nd low-impactdyes are GOTS certified, decking and dust cover are organic cotton, foam is partially soy based, and made in the U.S.

Parlour Sofa from CB2, $999. Made with a certified sustainable, kiln-dried hardwood frame, seat cushion made of soy-based polyfoam and fiber, upholstered in cotton (not as good as organic, but better than polyester).

Greenington Magnolia Loveseat, $1319 and Magnolia Sofa Chair, $839. As truly green furniture goes, Greenington is up there with the best of them.  Made of sustainably-harvested bamboo. The style of these is “love it” or “hate it.” They remind me a bit of patio furniture, but I think they could work surrounded by the right colors and decor. (aff)

If you want something really green…

If you want a sofa with LOTS of green credentials, there are a bunch of options, but you’ll have to spend more. Here are a couple of my favorites, with pricing where available.

Camille Sofa from EKLA Home (call for pricing). Upholstered in 100% U.S.-grown and -milled organic cotton fabric, and made with natural Rubber, 100% organic U.S.-grown and -milled wool, organic cotton barrier cloth, FSC-certified alder frame and legs, recycled steel springs and Safecoat no-VOC stain. It doesn’t get much better than that, but this sofa will run you a couple thousand dollars.

EcoBalanza Square Sofa, $4600. Made with FSC-Certified, kiln-dried wood, natural latex foam cushions, 8-way hand tied coil springs and eco-friendly adhesives. Available upholstery options include recycled Polyester along with organic hemp, cotton and wool.

General Tips

When you’re really on a budget for furniture, you have to get creative. Buying used furniture from Craigslist or a thrift store is always a good way to go. Find a good upholsterer in your area, or if you feel adventurous, attempt to reupholster your found pieces on your own. There are tons of tutorials online, and you wouldn’t believe how beautiful you can make your home with used pieces. A great example:

There are probably very few people who shop online and don’t know about Gilt Groupe. A few months back, I wrote about my search for an affordable, eco-friendly desk. Later, I decided to get the Terra Console from West Elm to use as a desk, but that didn’t work out. So I had been searching Craigslist for a desk for what felt like months. It seemed like everything was either overpriced, made of particleboard, or both. Finally, last week, I found a gorgeous MidCentury desk that I couldn’t pass up! I’ll post pics as soon as I pick it up and tell you what I plan to do with it. In the meantime, I had to share this gorgeously ornate, completely over-the-top desk I found at Restoration Hardware.

I am in love with the chunky corbels made of beautifully-aged reclaimed teak. They are reproduced from an edifice in Philadelphia and elaborately hand carved. I am normally not a fan of anything quite this ornate, but I can easily envision this in a sparse, modern office, surrounded by white lacquered pieces. It would be the focal point of that room — no doubt.

If you like the style, but think it would be better suited in a living room or entryway, it is also available as a slightly smaller console table.

Sometimes, my taste is akin to shooting myself in the foot. This is mostly because I don’t have an unlimited budget, but also because I often find pieces that I think are “perfect” for me, only to have my taste change a few days/weeks/months later. For example, a while back I went through a phase where I desperately wanted a platform bed. So much, in fact, that my husband and I (with our combined carpentry skills of 0) actually flirted with the idea of building one ourselves. Then I realized that while a platform bed would be great for the small space we were living in at the time, it would feel too small if we ever moved into a larger home. This bed, however, satisfies both my desire for something simple with clean lines with the lust for something more grandiose.

It feels like something out of a modern fairytale. It has all the allure of a traditional four-poster canopy bed without all the ornate details that generally make them feel more old world and granny chic than I’d like. And it is intended for outdoor use as well. If you’ve ever watched any of the dozens of reality shows set in a huge mansion with a equally huge pool, then you can easily imagine this bed used as a cabana poolside. Somehow I don’t think that’s how I’d want to spend $4000+, but it’s nice to know that it can serve more than one purpose.

That price tag also reignites in me the itch to try my hand at carpentry, because as much as I love it, it would be a long while before we could save up this much for one piece of furniture.

I am somewhat addicted to bold, graphic elements in decorating. This addiction reveals itself throughout my home, from the textural focal point of a headboard my husband and I created in our master bedroom to the sunburst and butterflies that adorn the wall in my daughter’s room. I love silhouettes and bold patterns that draw your attention. So the Graphic Collection from Iannone Design is the stuff of my dreams. I’ve never really been a fan of anything that could be described as French Country. In fact, I’d have to say that as a general rule, that is the exact opposite of my design aesthetic. So why in the world did I fall in love with these chairs and sofa from FCLstyle.com? “FCL” as in French Country Living. Because they’re gorgeous!

The Feuille de Chocolat Armchair is definitely my favorite of the bunch, although I’m only mildly fond of the flocked blue and brown print. And although the Eco-Seat sofa has very French lines and details, I could see it in a very bohemian home with an eclectic mishmash of styles — exactly what I envision my “perfect” home being. And since the pillows come with the sofa, that’s one less detail you have to think about (unless you choose to recover them).

But the look isn’t the best part about these pieces. Check out “Why It’s Green” below.

After writing about eco-friendly decor and furnishings for two years, I’ve begun to notice a trend. I tend to see the same brands over and over again as I search for new companies and products to profile. I love that green living has become so accepted that these truly green products can be found everywhere, but I also love variety. It’s not every day that I come across a brand new maker of environmentally friendly furniture, so when I do, I take notice. You can see why from the photos.

Pure Inspired Design is the brainchild of interior designer Samantha Cobos, and clearly, making these pieces was a labor of love. First, these are stylish, timeless, high-quality pieces. I’m personally swooning over the Carmel chair in the image above (top right). It is the kind of piece I can easily imagine still having in my home 50 years from now, or living happily in my daughter’s stylish first apartment. And above all else, when buying furniture for your home, the key to buying green is buying pieces that will last.

Of course, all of the pieces in the Pure Inspired Design collection go quite a few steps further toward being eco-friendly, which you can see in the “Why It’s Green” list below. And what I love about this collection is that pretty much everything can be customized. For most pieces, including standard sofas, sectionals, chairs and ottomans, customers can select their cushion, leg finish and arm style, as well as choose from a huge range of solid and patterned organic fabrics. On occasion, I like to sit and dream about what I’d have in my home if I have a whole lot more disposable income. In fact, there’s a whole “dream home” folder on my computer that’s full of gorgeous pieces I’d love to own. They’re the types of pieces that stay with you for a lifetime, with a healthy dose of versatility mixed in so I could change them up slightly throughout the years. I’m coming down with a serious case of baby fever. Perhaps its the fact that we finally have enough room to welcome a new addition to our family, or the fact that it’s been a few years since I held an infant in my arms and I want my daughter to have a sibling in the household, or that so many of my friends, both in the bloggy world and the real world, are either pregnant or new moms. Most of all, it’s probably the lure of a new nursery to decorate. In any case, I’m getting a serious itch to have a new baby. I’m not the only one. My friend Renee over at Cutie Booty Cakes wrote about the same thing yesterday. These feelings, of course, have led to my imagining what my baby’s gorgeous, green nursery would look like.  The new Eicho and Roh nursery furniture collections from Spot on Square are making my itch exponentially worse.

The Eicho collection includes a minimal crib and changing table, and they are both reasonably priced and eco-friendly, which can sometimes be a tough combination to find. There is, of course, some sacrifice involved. Rather than hardwood, these pieces are made of MDF, albeit made of 100% recycled/reclaimed, formaldehyde-free MDF. Still, I think it’s a great value for parents and parents-to-be who want an environmentally-friendly nursery but who aren’t in the position to drop 4+ figures on a crib alone.

The Roh collection is drop-dead gorgeous, but definitely for the more well-off among us unless you’ve done a whole lot of saving in preparation for your little one. Along with a frame made of beautiful locally-sourced Walnut, the side panels of the Roh crib are made of BPA free, phthalate free, recyclable acrylic, making for a contemporary, but timeless look that any parent will be able to appreciate. The crib is available with just one side or both sides made of acrylic, and the ends are available in gray or white. The dresser with available changing tray are equally as fabulous. I’m drooling right now.

Soooo…now I just have to convince the hubby that it’s time for a new baby, and figure out in advance how we’d explain it to our 4-year-old.

My husband and I have been sleeping on just a set of mattresses on the floor for a while, because buying a bed frame just hasn’t been a priority. But I’m really beginning to miss the feeling of a fully decked-out bed. I love the low height of the mattresses, confirming my suspicion that I’d be happiest with a platform bed that doesn’t take up a lot of space. I’ve featured some great ones in the past, but the Stillwell and Low Rider beds by WONK NYC have skyrocketed to the top of the list.

Both beds are made of carbonized bamboo ply. The low-rider features a sleek, simple style with just enough corner detail to make it special. And at just 9″ high, we’d still be able to maintain the low profile I’ve come to love. I really like it, but the Stillwell has more of the features that I think I’d want in a bed, including a gorgeous headboard and storage space underneath. The headboard and storage drawers cost extra, but I’m OK with that. I think they’d be worth the price. The Stillwell is also available in natural bamboo, which is a closer match to the IKEA wardrobes we’ve had for a while.
