If it seems like I’m an Amy Butler fan girl, I’m not ashamed to admit that I am. I’ve always loved her patterns, but once she starting making the transition to organics, I fell in love with her anew. And then I won my gorgeous Bucharest bedding and the deal was officially sealed. And as if I could love her work any more than I already do, I discovered some new things today:

1. She makes organic cotton shower curtains!
2. New bedding designs are available!
3. Some of her bedding has matching window treatments!

OK. I’ll stop shouting now. But really, if you could lived in the luxurious comfort that is a 400 thread count Amy Butler comforter, you’d be shouting too.

Trust me when I tell you that my husband and I spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect shower curtain for our bathroom, and we settled for a simple yellow and white traditional cotton option from Target, much to my dismay (I REALLY wanted organic). Had I known a beautiful shower curtain existed to match the fabulous bedding we already owned, my indecisiveness would’ve been eliminated. The shower curtain is currently available only in Bucharest (gray) and Coventry and only at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

The window treatments are similarly available in only two patterns — Dancing Garden and Poppy. Still, they are a beautiful example of how great it is to have patterned options for organic window treatments. You could definitely make your own curtains with an Amy Butler fabric, but premade options that are this pretty are hard to find. The catch 22, of course, is that they are only available in one length at 84″. However, you could always add a panel of coordinating fabric to the bottom (maybe in navy or green) to make them long enough for your needs. Coordinating valances are also available. I’m not a fan of the look of a valance, but I could easily imagine hacking one into two pieces to lengthen a curtain.

And lastly, how could anyone NOT swoon over this new bedding? Of late, I’ve been fighting the urge to paint a whole room in a moody shade of navy, and the new Dream Daisy collection reminds me why. It features bold floral prints that could be happily at home in modern decor, and I love the way the photos are staged! The Full Bloom collection, in shades of coral, green and blue, isn’t really my cup of tea, but gorgeous nonetheless. These beds look like such a comfortable place to sleep and lounge! And my own experience with Amy Butler’s luxurious bedding has guaranteed that I will, eventually, buy another set, because it is by far the best, highest quality bedding we’ve ever owned.

More Amy Butler Loveliness: New Organic Bedding, Shower Curtains & Window Treatments

I have been trying to think of some clever way to introduce these towels by Amy Butler, but then I decided that their beauty is enough of an introduction. Really, I wish I could step out of the shower into any one of these gorgeous patterns. And if I didn’t love Amy Butler enough before, when she announced that her new bedding line would be made of organic cotton, I am definitely loving her now. When designers that I — and so many other people — admire make a commitment to making greener products, it makes the whole community take notice. It forces all of us to realize that while this way of life is no longer optional, there’s no reason it can’t be beautiful.

And these towels are really affordable too, and certainly cost less than many of the luxury towels we see every day that are made of traditional cotton or other non-sustainable fabrics. I wish they were 100% organic cotton and not just a “blend,” but this is a step in the right direction. I can’t vouch for their quality, but I just may buy a couple for my daughter’s bathroom. If I do, I’ll definitely let you know how they hold up.

Bathroom Envy: Organic Blend Towels by Amy Butler

I’ve never been a “muted” kind of girl when it comes to color. Although I do love shades of gray and chocolate brown, I’m also not afraid of bright pops of color like chartreuse, orange or yellow. In fact, I need that kind of color to inspire me. So when I want fabrics dyed with completely natural pigments like clay or vegetable inks, I’m generally left wanting more color. There’s one exception to this: Fabrics dyed with indigo.

The resulting color is a rich, bold blue — almost black with hints of purple — that really makes my day. The Indigo Shower Curtain from Viva Terra is a perfect example of natural dyeing done right. I’ve been seeing a lot of indigo lately, and it clearly has become a decorating trend. I’m generally not a fan of trends, preferring to choose what I like based on my overall taste, but this is one trend I’d be happy to embrace. In fact, if I had my own home, I’d be very tempted to paint a bedroom navy blue just so I could hang this shower curtain in the adjoining bathroom.

And given that the pickings are pretty slim when it comes to organic shower curtains, this is a welcome addition to the small,but growing, list.

I’ve Got the Blues: Indigo Shower Curtain from Viva Terra

It’s about time things started getting back to “normal” around here, whatever that is, so without further adieu, here’s a post a wrote weeks ago that’s just been itching for me to hit publish.

I’m not a one retailer kind of gal. I promise I’m not. I like to shop around at a variety of stores — both online and in the real world — to find the best of the best, and the greenest of the green. But when West Elm keeps making beautiful, eco-friendly products, I can’t help but return again and again. Seriously, if anyone feels like getting me a post-holiday gift, just shoot me a sizable gift card to West Elm and I guarantee you’ll make me happy. Their new eco-friendly offerings are so gorgeous that I couldn’t pick just one to feature.

The two new bedding collections, Fossil and Bloom, are so deliciously graphic that I can’t decide which I like best.  I’ve never really paid much attention to color trends and forecasts, preferring instead to choose what I love rather than what’s hot. But if the color forecasters saw the Bloom duvet cover, I’m pretty sure this beautiful gold tone would be on the list of coming trends. And since I have officially decided that gray is my favorite color (call me crazy if you wish), I want to bring home the Fossil bedding. Like now.

And after my husband washed our pristine white fabric shower curtain and turned it…well…not so white…I was reminded of how neglected that poor little room has become. I can’t think of a better way to remedy that than with some graphic, two-tone towels and a matching organic rug. The hexagons and diamonds are right up my geometric-shape-loving alley, so I’m starting a wish list.

They’ve Done It Again: New Organic West Elm Bedding & Bath Linens

My family recently moved into an apartment in an older building that comes with a lot of quirks. The water running from our faucets turns brown on days with a lot of rain, and no matter what we do to get rid of them, we find at least a few occasional spiders and bugs. We can’t do much about these issues, but there were some changes we knew we wanted to make. Among them: Installing a low-flow, handheld showerhead.

The Earth Massage Handheld Chrome Showerhead by Niagara Conservation operates at just 1.5 gallons per minute, which really adds up when you consider the fact that many showerheads spit out water at 2.5 gallons per minute or more. When they contacted me, I couldn’t wait to review it. We can’t see or feel the difference, which is a good thing. In fact, the water pressure is better than it was with our previous showerhead, and we are showering just as effectively now as we were before we made the switch. Knowing that we’re conserving water without any extra effort is a great feeling, and to maximize those savings, we try to keep our showers as short as possible. One of the upsides of living in an older building is that the water gets hot immediately, so there’s no water waste while we wait for the water to warm up.

My favorite feature, by far, is the 72″, tangle-free hose, which makes bathing my 4-year-old a whole lot easier. As I mentioned, we live in an older building, and the surface of the tub shows its age. I’m not really comfortable letting her sit on the uneven surface for a bath, so I turn on the shower and hand her the showerhead, making the experience much more interactive for her and a heck of a lot easier for me.

I do wish that the showerhead came with a few more spray settings. It comes with just 2 settings, although you can moderate the water pressure one of the two settings by rotating the edge of the head. I use the highest settings when I need a hot, massaging shower, and lower pressure when bathing mini me, as she’s not fond of the sensations of dozens of streams of water pounding her sensitive skin.

Overall, I’m thrilled to know that we have a stylish, quality showerhead that is saving us water and energy, even if we don’t have to pay a separate water bill (it’s included in our rent).

Save a Gallon or 10: Earth Massage Handheld Showerhead (+Giveaway)

I don’t have a whole lot of experience with big remodeling jobs like kitchens or bathrooms, but I know beautiful tilework when I see it. As soon as I saw the recycled glass tile made by Stardust Glass, I knew I’d found something special. Anyone who has been reading this site for any length of time knows that I’m a fan of clean, modern design with a little bit of eclectic personality thrown in, and I love, love, love patterns made from graphic geometric shapes. It would also help me convince my mother to use red in small areas, like a few of the tiles in the backsplash, instead of covering her entire home in the color from top to bottom — which is what she would do if I let her.

Home Fashion Statement: Stardust Recycled Tile

One of the biggest problems my husband and I face is where to keep our dirty laundry. I mean that literally — not figuratively. Right now, we’re using a ratty old collapsible nylon hamper I’ve had since college, and the thing really is on its last legs. But we appreciate that it has a pretty large capacity, where other, more stylish options, are generally designed to hold smaller loads.

The Savannah Divided Hamper from Pottery Barn just may be our next pick, as it does a good job of combining form and function. The capacity still doesn’t seem very large, but I love the fact that we’d be able to separate two loads. It’s also pretty great to look at, as hampers go, and it wouldn’t be an eyesore like our current solution.

Considering our cloth hamper will soon be rendered unusuable, this is a great alternative. We’ll just have to figure out a way to recycle what’s left of the current hamper. I graduated from college in 2003, so I’d say for something so cheap, it’s served us pretty well. For $179, the Pottery Barn hamper better last at least twice as long. And if it helped me achieve a bathroom as beautiful and well-organized as the photo above, I’d be a happy camper.

Eco-Eye Candy: Le Viette Organic Cotton ‘Dessert’ Towels

I’ve always dreamed of having a beautiful, spa-inspired bathroom where I can relax after a long day of chasing mini me, working and keeping house. Alas, the reality is a drab, boring room that is more function than form. And after you spend 2 hours scrubbing every surface like I did this past weekend, it can be hard to see the room as beautiful. Rhea Alexander from sustainable retailer D.I.G.S. sent me something to help change my perception and add a little sophistication to what is admittedly my least favorite room in the house.

Their Marin Bath Collection is eco-luxury at it’s best. These are no ordinary bathroom accessories. They are handmade of FSC-certified wood from Peru in collaboration with local artisans and the WWF. This collection comes with clean lines and beautiful wood tones that will make them nearly impossible to ignore. Twelve difference accessories are available in 3 wood colors, from light to dark. The bathroom is one of the places in a home where it’s easy to overlook accumulated clutter. Countertops often wind up covered with the remnants of daily living: toothpaste,  hair products, personal care items and more. And since the bathroom is boring anyway, there’s no real incentive to put any of that stuff away. Trust me — the Marin Collection is that incentive.

I received a square container that currently contains cotton swabs, and that simple addition is, in part, what made me go on a mad cleaning spree of the bathroom this past weekend. I put away everything that was cluttering the countertops (and which are now cluttering the cabinet below), and I love the contrast of the dark wood tones against the ivory counter.

Be warned: The collection is pricey and definitely falls into the “luxury” category. In other words, these aren’t bath accessories you buy on a whim. They’re more of an investment. However, based on the quality and craftsmanship of the piece I received, it’s unlikely you’d ever have to replace them. Who said you had to give up luxury to go green, right? If I could get my hands on the rest of the collection, I’d be one happy lady!

Living the High Life: Marin Luxury Bath Collection from D.I.G.S.

With the curtain or door closed, I can personally say that our shower is one of the parts of our home where I’ve shown the least concern about style. Sure, I switched to a spiffy new low-flow shower head a few weeks ago, but my main concern in that case was conserving water. It’s easy to close the door and forget about it. That said, I do have a need for a new shower caddy, considering the years-old, cheap plastic one is now warped and won’t hang straight. I figured if I’m going to replace it, I don’t want to buy more non-recyclable plastic that I’ll eventually end up having to send to the landfill.

Gaiam came to my rescue (as they regularly do) with this beautiful Bamboo Shower Caddy. I know firsthand that unlike wood, bamboo (which is a grass) is very water-resistant, so it should hold up well in the shower. And since the master bath in our dream home has a standalone shower with walls and a door made of unfrosted glass — meaning you can see straight into the shower — it would probably be a good idea to get something with a little style. The Asian spa-inspired design is the perfect compromise for a purchase that is mostly utilitarian. If I could step out of the shower onto a naturally antibacterial cork bath mat ($42, shown above), I’d be in good shape.

Don’t Neglect Your Shower Style: Bamboo Caddy & Cork Bath Mat

I have learned a lot about green living while writing and researching for Green Your Decor. I know where to look when I want a rug that won’t offgas noxious chemicals and why it’s a good idea to pay extra for soy-based cushions in upholstered furniture. But I admit I haven’t learned a whole lot about conservation in other ways. Because let’s face it — an FSC-certified, fair trade sculpture makes me feel good about my purchase, but it won’t reduce my energy use or conserve water. I’m trying to be a lot more diligent about making changes that are bigger than just replacing all my light bulbs with CFLs and using the dishwasher when its full. The kind of changes that make an impact that you can’t necessarily see right away. Replacing our existing shower head with a Waterpik EcoFlow 1.5 low-flow shower head was one of my first steps in this direction.

The EcoFlow is supposed to save up to a gallon of water per minute. This alone peaked my interest. The average shower in our home lasts between 10 and 15 minutes, so that’s a big water savings overall.  We just recently received and installed the EcoFlow, but I am cautiously optimistic that over the next month or two, we’ll see a difference — even if small — in our water bill. According to Waterpik’s water savings calculator, if we take 4 showers per day at an average of 12 minutes each, we can save $217.25 over a year, along with 17,520 gallons of water. Those are some impressive numbers.

Installation was a simple process that took my husband less than 5 minutes. And I love the 5 spray settings that can be adjusted by simply rotating the front edge of the showerhead. I’m a sucker for a relaxing shower, so being able to switch between full body coverage, a concentrated spray, misting and two different massage settings has made it a joy for me already.

Switching to a water-saving, low-flow shower head is one of the more affordable changes anyone can make that will have a positive impact on the Earth. And if you’re wondering what we did with our existing shower head, we’re planning on donating it to the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore, so it won’t end up in the landfill. I do, of course, wish that the EcoFlow was made with recycled metal content and that the packaging was recyclable #1, #2 or #5 plastic. It still has a ways to go, but a low-flow faucet is a step in the right direction.

When I step out of the shower, I just love the feeling of stepping onto a plush rug and sinking my toes into it. Having in-floor also means that the rug is often warm when I step on it. Green Steal of the Week: Organic Snow Leopard Bath Mat

I’ve always wanted my bathroom to be a spa-like environment, but it’s hard to accomplish that wish a cheap plastic trash can and uninspiring bath decor. Most of our bathroom accessories are packed away in storage, but since we bought them years ago, it is a safe bet that they are both outdated and far from eco-friendly. Great Green Gift Giveaway: Coyuchi Organic Cotton Blue Bath Towels

I’m a little ashamed to admit that I’m a bit of a dictator when it comes to towel use. There are a few that are my “special” towels that I won’t let anyone else use. One has been designated as such because of its size — it is a bath “sheet” that is therefore large enough to wrap around me comfortably. After all, I’m not an itty bitty lady, so I can’t really use an itty bitty towel. The second I have accosted because I love the subtle linear pattern created by the weave of the cotton. I know…crazy. But I like it.

If I bought one of these towels organic, hand-loomed towels from the Ode’on Collection, something tells me I’d have a third to add to the “special” group.  The pattern is gorgeous, and I can’t help but love the great collection of colors, from a deep, rich mulberry to a nature-inspired jade.

At this price, these towels definitely fall into the luxury category, but it is a luxury I’d love to have if I could afford it.
