It’s probably seemed quiet around here for the past few weeks. That’s because I have hit what I call my after-Christmas crash. Basically, the month of December is one of my busiest, meaning that I’m usually going and going, right up until Christmas. Or until I just can’t go any more. So instead of starting the new year full of energy and resolve to make this year better than last, I started it exhausted and unable to focus. However, I promise this is only temporary, and I’ll be back to “myself” in time.

In all of this, though, the one thing I’ve been able count on is getting a good night’s sleep. Really.

I made the mistake of falling asleep on our sofa late one afternoon. Boy, did I regret it. When I woke up, everything hurt, from the arm I had fallen asleep on to my back, neck, shoulders and hips. I seriously felt like I’d been hit by a truck. Or at least a small car. Not a good look.

When I was able to drag my aching body off the sectional and get into bed, it felt like a cloud by comparison. Instead of being contorted into an uncomfortable position, my back was supported and aligned. In our new bed, I can lay on either side, or sleep on my back or stomach, and still be comfortable. Really, the Oyasumi organic mattress from The Clean Bedroom has been a godsend.

Particularly during the winter, I appreciate the fact that this mattress tends to stay warmer than a traditional mattress. This is probably because of a combination of the latex and the thick organic cotton cover. In any case, during the winter it’s a welcome change from our old innerspring mattress, which would get cold if you were out of the bed for more than 2 minutes. This added warmth is a real blessing when we wake up to 27 degree weather and have to take my daughter out to catch the bus. I couldn’t ask for a better winter bed. In the summer time, though, the extra warmth means we eliminate a few layers from the bed and sleep with just a lightweight comforter (instead of a comforter, a flat sheet, and sometimes a thin throw blanket).

So although my new year has gotten offer to an incredibly slow start, it’s definitely not from lack of sleep. I’m doing just fine in that department. Now if someone can just give me a few shots of energy to use for everything else, I’ll be back on track.

It’s been a little more than 3 months since my husband and I received our new organic mattress set from The Clean Bedroom, and oh, what wonderful months they have been. It’s hard to explain the difference in sleeping on an old lumpy innerspring mattress and a plush, natural latex one to someone who has never experienced it, but suffice it to say the difference is awesome. When I wrote the last post, I had only experienced the new bed for a few days. Now I have months of experience under my belt, and it has been all good!

You always hear in mattress commercials that innerspring mattresses put a lot of pressure on the body. Now that I’m no longer experiencing that pressure, I finally understand what they mean. With our spring mattress, I felt every twist, turn and shift throughout the night, and I often woke up multiple times and found it difficult to fall asleep again. Now, when I shift my position or body weight, I don’t feel it at all — at least not enough to wake me up. It feels like sinking into a plush pillow, and because of this, EVERY position is comfortable.

I used to be primarily a side sleeper. However, with the Oyasumi mattress set, I have found that it also has become comfortable to sleep on my stomach and back. My husband might disagree, though, since he still sleeps on his side most nights. But I know he agrees this is the best bed we’ve ever owned.

And the Natura DreamMate Organic Pillows? They are just as plump and well-shaped as they were on the day we opened the box. We can fold then, roll them up and bunch them as we sleep, and they still bounce back to their original shape. I can’t tell you how refreshing this is after years of sleeping on pillows that start out fluffy, but wind up flat as as pancake.

In three months, the only downside we’ve found to using this new mattress is that it is very heavy and hard to move. This isn’t ideal when changing sheets, particularly when I am doing it alone, but it’s not a huge problem for us. If I had to nitpick, I would also say that this bed does seem to keep our body temperatures hotter. This is especially noticeable when the heat is on in the apartment. However, we’ve learned to compensate for this by eliminating a flat sheet and sleeping with just a lightweight comforter.

All told, the pros of living with this mattress far outweigh the cons. The only time I wake up in pain is when I went to bed already sore from a full day at the computer or from an intense workout. And even then, the fact that I can comfortably shift positions during the night to find a a spot that will minimize my soreness means that I’ll usually wake up without pain, even if I went to bed with it.

I’d be a liar if I tried to give this bed a poor review. Really, we love it. It has made falling asleep a whole lot easier, and it’s made early morning wake-up calls particularly torturous, because we never want to get out of bed. We’re incredibly thankful to The Clean Bedroom for the opportunity to try it. It has made a world of difference for our sleep habits.

As grateful as I am to have a bed to sleep in each night, there are few things more uncomfortable than sleeping in a lumpy, outdated mattress. My husband and I had been doing just that for the past 2 or 3 years. While our mattress was just 6 years old, and its recommended you replace your mattress after 8 years, ours had a little more wear and tear than your average bed. In the years we’ve had it, we’ve moved a whopping 8 times. Sometimes the moves were across town and sometimes across state lines, and for a long while, we slept on the mattress and box spring right on the floor, with no bed frame. Needless to say, all of that hustling and bustling turned our once-comfy pillow top mattress into a lumpy mess that made for restless nights and mornings filled with back pain.

A few days ago, though, all that changed, and you couldn’t pay me to go back.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I had partnered with The Clean Bedroom to rebuild my master bedroom from the ground up — starting with the bed. And I have to say that of all the partnerships I’ve made at Green Your Decor over the years, this one has already been one of the most rewarding. You don’t realize just how restless your sleep is until you have a night of really great sleep.

Thanks to the Sleep Number store in the local mall, my husband and I learned a few years ago that while I prefer a relatively firm mattress that offers great back support, my husband prefers the comfort of something softer. So he chose the medium core and I chose firm.

Once we placed our order, it took a few weeks to build and ship the mattress and foundation. However, the delivery process was seamless. I received an email from the shipping company requesting that I choose a delivery time from 4 options — each more than a week away. Because of that, I was able to plan my schedule around those hours. And because we live on the third floor of our apartment building, I was relieved to know they’d deliver the mattresses right inside our front door. Bringing groceries up those stairs is a workout, so I wasn’t looking forward to the prospect of lugging anything heavier.

Plus, I’d heard that natural latex mattresses are heavy. And what I’d heard was absolutely correct.

The foundation was about the same weight as a typical box spring, but the mattress? It was Really. Heavy. Plus natural latex is much more flexible than a standard mattress, which means once we opened the box in which it was shipped, it was really hard to keep it upright so we could pick it up and move it into our bedroom. It took some trial and error, but eventually, we were able to move it and lay it on the foundation. The latex cores shifted, but we simply unzipped the organic cotton cover and shifted them back in place. Easy peasy.

And of course, once the bed was set up, albeit sheetless, I couldn’t help but give it a test run. And as soon as I laid on it, I knew we’d made the right choice. My first comment to my husband? “Wow babe! It’s like sleeping on a cloud!” He laughed and gave me a side-eye, but as soon as he gave it a try, the look on his face was priceless. Pure, unadulterated comfort.

I was so lost in CloudVille that I didn’t even want to get up to put sheets on the bed. But since we also received two Natura DreamMate Organic Pillows and a Naturally Organic wool, summer weight comforter, I knew I needed to cover them up to maintain their pristine condition. But once I put sheets on the bed, it was lights out. I took my first afternoon nap in years. And not because I was really tired. Seriously, once my head hit the pillow, I couldn’t help myself. I was out in minutes.

When I woke up about 2 hours later, my daughter had already eaten dinner and taken a bath (did I mention how much I love my husband?), and I felt like a million dollars. Really.

And lest you think I’m the only one with this opinion, here’s another tidbit. My husband and I will usually lay in bed and watch TV or play golf on the Playstation for a few hours before we actually go to sleep. In this bed, that is all but impossible. The first night, my husband fell asleep in minutes, and I wasn’t far behind. And when we woke up in the morning, it was hard not to notice how great our backs felt. The pain was negligible, at best. We weren’t stiff or cramped or complaining like we usually had been. It was great!

Plus, unlike an innerspring mattress, there is very little movement in the mattress itself when a person gets on and off the bed. Sort of like those commercials for memory foam mattresses when they put a cup of wine on one side of the bed and have someone jump up and down on the other side. We didn’t try that test, for obvious reasons, but the difference in bed motion was immediately noticeable. I used to wake up nearly every morning when my husband got out of bed, or more specifically, when he sat back down. Now, he’s up and dressed before I even realize what’s going on.

I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better sleep experience, and it has only gotten better with time. The Natura pillows are incredibly soft and cushy, and the summer weight comforter offers just enough loft and softness without being too hot. I’m one of those people who will sleep with a blanket no matter how hot it is, because I just like the feeling of being in a cozy little cocoon. But 90 degree Georgia nights will change that in a hurry. This comforter is a Godsend, because it gives me the comfort I want without making me sweat.

I hate to sound like I’m overselling this, but this trio of organic, natural sleep products has completely changed our nights and mornings for the better. I like to read in bed, but lately, I haven’t been able to get in more than a few pages at night because I fall asleep so quickly. I couldn’t even stay awake long enough to finish watching Burn Notice! And if you know me, you know that I Do. Not. Miss. Burn Notice.

But, is a great night’s sleep worth it? Absolutely! Now we just have to make rest of the room look as great as the bed feels!

I can’t be the only one who looks forward to West Elm’s announcements that they’ve released new products. My excitement is doubled, however, because of the fact that West elm is one of the mainstream retailers of home goods that seems to be truly committed to providing greener product options for their customers. To be sure, this doesn’t apply to their entire product selection, but they consistently include products that are sustainable in some way.

Here are some of my favorite green products from their latest release:

I am a huge fan of TOMS Shoes. If you’ve never heard of them, they are a shoe maker that gives a pair of shoes to a child in need for every single pair purchased. So what does that have to do with organic bedding, right?

Well, The Company Store, a 100-year-old manufacturer of bedding and other household textiles, has developed a similar program.

They teamed up with regional non-profit organizations all across the country for their Buy One, Give One program, which donates a comforter to a homeless child for every one sold. And for anyone who doubts the impact this could have, consider these facts:

• Each year, 1 in 50 children in the U.S. are homeless.
• Families with children make up 34% of the homeless population.

This program could help up to 1.5 million children. So if you’re in need of new bedding, grab one of their comforters and rest assured that you’re helping a child who needs a little warmth and comfort.

While none of the comforters are made from a specifically sustainable material, the cause is worthy. One of the things I am most tempted to do for the new year is to completely revamp my bedroom. This year, we just settled for a new organic sheet set from Target to replace a set that has seen better days, but I wanted to makeover the whole bed. Nurseries and kids’ rooms are so much fun to decorate that I almost wish we’d have another baby just so I’d have a nursery to decorate. Yes. It really is that serious

You can get away with whimsical design elements and themes in kids’ room that might not be appropriate in adult spaces (though I’m just adventurous enough to try them anyway). This organic, polka dotted bedding from the Land of Nod is playful enough for a little girl or boy, but it also could work for a teenager or even in a guest room. The patterns are fun, but because they are tone-on-tone in deep shades pink and blue, they’re more sophisticated than something of the the baby blue or powder pink variety.

I have spent months with baby fever, in part because so many of my blogging friends recently had or are having babies and I wanted to remember what it felt like again. Sending my daughter off to kindergarten only multiplied that effect, although I wonder how wise it is to wish for an infant now that the house is finally quiet in the daytime…lol. West Elm has a knack for creating bedding designs that make me seriously consider redecorating my entire bedroom around them. Of course, there’s only so much redecorating my husband can stand. But don’t these photos make you feel the same way? Maybe it’s the moody, effortless way some of the rooms are styled, but they have a way of making me feel like curling up in bed for the rest of the day. Sort of like the way you feel on a rainy day, but in a good way.

I will completely admit that I have a hard time decorating with traditional neutrals: white, off white, beige, ecru…whatever you want to call it. I’ve seen so many homes and rooms with almost-white walls and very light, neutral furnishings that I love. But I have a hard time creating that kind of look myself. What I’ve learned is to make neutrals work, you have to add texture and elements of interest, even if they aren’t colorful. This bedding is a great example of a neutral textile that is still very interesting.

It features shades of warm beige and tan with a beautiful pattern that is floral without being too frilly. I could easily imagine building a soothing, serene bedroom around this bedding.
