Back in December, I mentioned that I wanted to give my daughter a doll house, mostly because my father and I had built one together when I was a little girl. It took hours and hours, but it was a great experience that I’ll always remember and one I wanted to share with my own child. After searching fruitlessly for an eco-friendly option, I remembered that my father had actually kept the doll house we put together all those years ago. It was sitting unused in a dusty corner of his office, and it was unpainted because we never got around to that part, but he still had it. So after my dad and I shared a few fond memories of the time we spent building it, he shipped my lovely old doll house to me.
Before and After
Finally, I’m ready to reveal the result of the SYLVANIA Blogger Makeover Challenge. Just to refresh your memory, SYLVANIA invited me and four other bloggers to do a makeover in the room of our choosing to demonstrate how easy it can be to spruce up your home in one weekend.
So here’s how it turned out:

You may recall that a few weeks ago, our laundry room looked like this:

That sad room is no more, and I’d say we’ve come a long way!
What we did
For this makeover we used a lot of DIY ingenuity and creative concealment.
Aside from the patio, our laundry room is the one space inside our home that has been truly neglected. Since the washer broke down months ago, we have used it for little more than storage. We’d been going to the laundromat across the street to take care of our washing and drying, and I only set foot in there when I need to grab the broom or vacuum, or sort recycling when it’s starting to pile up. Needless to say, the room has seen better days:

I’ve seen my fair share of lamps that looked like the “before” version of this one. I’ve even owned one or two. Like most people, I didn’t have the foresight to imagine such a simple, boring lamp could be turned into anything more, but for switching the lampshade. Thankfully, Katie at Matsutake does have vision, and she managed to turn this lackluster piece into something spectacular!
Believe it or not, she upcycled 14 plastic Coke bottles to create this beauty. I can’t believe how high-end the final result looks!

I like to think of myself as pretty crafty. I often see items in a store and think of a way (or find a tutorial) so I can make it myself. But no way in the world am I THIS crafty. I know the entertainment center above doesn’t look like much. And in its original state, it wasn’t much. Just a $30 thrift store find. But the enterprising grandparents who found it had much grander plans for it.
