I love blue. Really. It is officially my favorite among all the wall colors we’ve ever used. In turn, our finished dining room is my new favorite room. That could be because we haven’t really finished any other spaces in this apartment, but I think it’s because it really just turned out great. And I have FLOR to thank for the inspiration.

The moment I saw their Sophistikat rug last year, I knew I had to have it — eventually, anyway. And I kept finding inspiration elsewhere in similar shades of blue: the gorgeous blue Ikat dinnerware from Viva Terra and sweet cloth napkins from West Elm. Slowly, in my mind, a dining room came together.

And then slowly, it came together in real life too.

We knew we had to find the perfect blue for the walls. Given our past experience picking paint colors on the Internet or in the store, only to bring them home and have them be far from what we expected, we bought 4 testers. One was too blue, one too green and another too black. In the end, we chose Glidden’s Rich Navy, color matched to Behr Premium Plus, paint with primer in it (low-VOC, of course). In the photo above, it is the sample on the far left. I thought it read too purple at first, but my husband convinced me that the other option shown was too green. Now that it’s on the walls, I’m so happy I listened to him!

The piece that inspired the color scheme, the Sophistikat rug was a challenge to put together — not because of the tiles themselves (which are a breeze to assemble) but because of the pattern. While each tile is similar, they are not exactly the same. So it took a bit of sorting to find ones that would match up relatively closely. As a result, the pattern is a bit random where I switched from a tighter diamond pattern to a wider one. Still, I LOVE the look. It is perfect imperfection.

Now for the next piece of the puzzle. By the time I convinced my husband of my vision for the ikat dinnerware, the dessert plates were no longer in stock. So I had to improvise. I bought a set of 4 dinner plates and a set of 4 bowls (on clearance, of course). But we needed place settings for 6. So I grabbed some cobalt blue glass dinner and dessert plates and bowls from Ikea to complete the collection.

As you can see in the two detail photos above, I mixed and matched them for a look that is loose and eclectic, but still completely cohesive. And guess what? I love this imperfection too!

I grabbed some fabric napkins in blue and white from West Elm (also on clearance). I have to say though, I was really disappointed with the way they were shipped. One afternoon, my husband and I came home to a stack of 8 small boxes, all exactly the same size. I had to take a photo of the stack:

I couldn’t imagine what were in them, but once I saw that they were from West Elm, I jokingly said to my husband, “What did they do? Ship one napkin per box?”

Well, it turns out that’s exactly what they did.

All 8 napkins would’ve fit in a single box, but instead, I received 8. Not impressed with that kind of wastefulness at all. But I did love the napkins

And since we had such beautiful dinnerware, I really wanted to create a simple, but special, centerpiece. $7 worth of mums, $7 worth of organic lemons, a white porcelain bowl and a couple of blue and white porcelain balls, and my work was done.

In addition to the new stuff, we used a bunch of our existing, albeit mismatched, silverware and some wine glasses my husband and I have had since we got married. Oh yeah…and I can’t forget the orange juice. The extra pop of yellow really made the table come alive.

And once everything was assembled, the walls felt a little bare to me. I remembered some blue and white commemorative plates that my mother had given my husband and I a few years back. The two plates feature special locations in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, where my husband and I are both from. I never imagined I’d be a person who’d decorate with commemorative plates, but I actually really like how they look. And I get all nostalgic when I see the plate for Magen’s Bay, my favorite beach back home (which has also been named one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world — and oh, how I miss it), and Fort Christian, a location where I once filmed a music video with the steel band I played with in high school.

And here’s a final shot of the room from another angle. From this side, you can see that we painted the three walls in the dining nook, which really makes it feels like it’s own room rather than part of the larger living space. Isn’t that chunky crown molding fabulous?!!

And since it’s immediately to the right of the door when you walk through the short entry hall, you can see a reflection of that delicious blue paint in the magazine sunburst mirror that we hung in the entryway.

So what do you think? We love eating in our dining room now!

Giveaway winner

Now for the giveaway winner! I really thought more people would guess Sophistikat, but Haute Stuff was an obvious contender. But only four people guessed Sophistikat, and of those, Katie R. of Little Green Sewing Machine is the winner! So what did she win? Well, it’s not a FLOR rug, but I think it’s something equally as cool — an Organic Rouched Throw from West Elm!

I own two of these and I love them! They are incredibly soft and comfortable. And she can select which color she wants: Platinum (gray) or natural. PLUS, as a bonus, you can select the t-shirt of your choice from Differently Clothing, an organic t-shirt company I started with my husband! Katie, I’ll contact you via email about your prize!

Disclosure: FLOR provided me with the Sophistikat rug. All opinions are my own (as usual). The giveaway prize, however, is coming from my own pocket.

It seems like a lot of the eco-friendly rooms I receive or come across are nurseries, and that’s no surprise. It stands to reason that if you were going to make any room in your home greener, it would be the one where your precious babies will be living and sleeping. And this particular nursery is a special one. Marsh & Clark Design transformed this third-floor attic bedroom into a soothing, sustainable nursery for the 2010 San Francisco Decorator Showcase. And to make it extra special, the room is designed for not one, but THREE precious little ones.

A baby’s room ought to be the happiest place in the house – doubly (triply so) when it’s a room for triplets, said Chiya Ewald, of Marsh & Clark. We wanted to go beyond the deluge of duckies and primary colors to create a beautiful and innovative room that that appeals to modern parents’ aesthetics and sensibilities.

The nursery features three matching, handmade cribs that were built by local craftsman Rob Taboada. They are made of Machiche, an FSC-certified hardwood, and Medite, a formaldehyde-free, FSC-certified recycled fiberboard, and finished with a zero-VOC, water-based white lacquer. To further reduce off-gassing, the designers used non-toxic paints and selected organic or natural fibers for bedding, carpets and window treatments and all the other soft furnishings.

And while the room is large by most standards, we have to remember that it is built for three. The designers solve this problem with several elements that serve double-duty. Wall mirrors, which are hung to reflect light and enlarge the space, also fold down to reveal changing tables, and hidden benches in the dormers provide additional storage. And lit from inside, the perforated constellation on the front of each bench is designed to become a soft, yet sophisticated nightlight.

So, what do you think of the room? It’s not often you see a nursery designed for triplets. Overall, I think the room is soft and soothing, but more importantly, a safe eco-friendly space. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

This room has been about two months in the making, starting with a Green Room in a Box planning the space, but it’s finally done! Before I show you the completed room, here’s Miss Ja’Naya, enjoying her new reading corner:

As Niecy from Clean House would say, can you stand to see more? Be warned…there are a LOT of photos…

The view from the doorway

The other side of the room

Facing the doorway and closet

We definitely wanted to personalize a bit

This is the artwork Ja’Naya and I painted last weekend. Mine is on top and hers is on the bottom. I never intended to put them in the room, but they work, and they’re a hilarious reminder of my lack of talent with a paintbrush.

The posters are hung low to be eye-level (or close to it) for a very tall four-year-old, a.k.a. Ja’Naya. And the spot under the posters feels a little empty, with good reason. We are having a custom-built toy box donated by Mod Mom Furniture to corral all the larger toys (like a remote control car and toy piano) that can’t fit in the small pink boxes. We won’t have it until June, but it’s worth the wait for a handmade toy box built with the love of a mother

The first battalion of the stuffed animal army. The others are hiding in the closet.

This teddy bear is a soft spot for me, so I had to take a closeup. My daughter received this bear a few years ago, and my husband put this photo in it. It is the two of us when we were a couple as teenagers. Yes…we’ve known each other THAT long. I think I was 13 years old in this photo.

This corner should look familiar from the sneak peek I posted last week.

Ja’Naya has had this vase for a LONG time, and now it is finally serving its intended purpose. And yes…that is a giant green clothespin next to it. Makes a great photo holder

And…we have come full circle. You’ll see I made another pillow since I posted the sneak peek.

Ja’Naya has an attached bathroom, and although we didn’t paint, we did make it coordinate.

Given that I’ve been picturing this room in my head for months, I’m really really happy with the final result! More importantly, Ja’Naya loves it! She’s always talking about her “pretty pink room” and how much she likes everything. That makes my heart smile more than anything else

There were some bumps in the road, of course. For example, we intended to turn the capiz shell wind chime into a chandelier, but alas, things don’t always go as planned. My husband’s stud finder also detects electrical work, and the spot where the wind chime is hanging was literally the ONLY spot on the entire ceiling without electrical wiring immediately above it. I was really frustrated by that, because I had imagined the wind chime as a beautiful, glowing chandelier in the center of the room. But I know when to leave well enough alone, and although I initially hated the placement of the capiz (I’m a little obsessed with this thing called “balance”), it really has grown on me. We weren’t able to wire it because it is so far away from the switch that would’ve controlled it, but I think it looks pretty nice even though it’s not lit up.

I also planned to paint the Way Basics storage units white, but after we painted the accent wall, I loved how they disappeared into the pink behind them, making the room feel even larger than it is. We (mostly me) definitely had to make some adjustments, but we got it done, and we think it’s fabulous!

Green Your Decor is probably one of the few interior design blogs where you’d be hard pressed to find photos of my home. There are a couple of reasons for that — the biggest of which being that we have moved so many times since I started this blog that I have never gotten a chance to really finish a room. Well, I’ve decided that I’m going to stop procrastinating. I won’t just finish all our rooms — I’ll also reveal them to you. So first up, our nearly complete master bedroom.

The ‘Before’ Shot

This isn’t a true before shot, since I forgot to take one before I started painting. But this is essentially “before” we did everything else. And yes, I did tell the hubby that this photo would be posted on my blog. He was too into a movie to care

The Details

Our headboard is made of 9 of Inhabit’s Seesaw wall flats (aff). I’ve been saying ever since I discovered the wall flats that I wanted to use them to make a headboard, and I finally got my chance. A pack of 10 tiles costs just $86, so it is pretty economical too. BUT, we went the even cheaper route and bought some of Inhabit’s “second-quality” wall flats. Think of it like buying “irregular” clothing at TJ Maxx. They are just $4.50 apiece (see the sale section), and the ones we received look gorgeous, with no noticeable imperfections. We bought a total of 12 tiles (miscalculation on my part), so we spent $54. Still, how’s that for an inexpensive eco-friendly headboard! We used the temporary mounting technique, which requires foam tape. They’re holding up really well and look pretty seamless. We love the finished look!

We also painted the boring lamps we’ve had for years metallic silver and replaced the old tan lamp shades with some funky new ones we found at Target. They look plain white when the light is turned off, but when the lamp is on, you see the fabulous silhouette of the pattern printed inside the shade. No, they’re not green, but I couldn’t resist!

My husband’s side of the room, which is much better curated than mine. And just in case you were wondering, that fabulous bedding IS Amy Butler’s organic Bucharest bedding. I won the comforter set in a giveaway last year from EcoSalon. Can you believe I’ve been holding onto it this long, but never used it? A few weeks ago, we bought a bed frame (made of recycled railroad ties, no less) and finally got our mattress up off the floor, and I figured it was high time we dressed the bed in something gorgeous. You can purchase Amy Butler bedding, in this design and all her others, in the Green Your Decor store.

I’ve had this jewelry box since my best friend gave it to me as a gift in college, and I have some other ideas to make it more “me”….including a vintage vase and some fresh flowers. Etsy to the rescue!

This is the stencil treatment that I did on the wall opposite the bed. It took me a few hours this past weekend, and I love it! It was just the pop of yellow we needed on the other side of the room. I made the stencil myself, inspired by this gorgeous laundry room makeover featured at Design Sponge last week. As you can see, we still need to get some baskets to go in the bottom of our TV stand, both for extra storage and to hide all the cords from the TV, cable box, etc. It’s a mess back there!

One final shot of the whole room. Can you tell Ja’Naya loves lounging on our bed?

The To-Do List

There are still some things I’d like to tackle:

A wool rug to cover up that awful wall-to-wall carpet

Some vintage items and fresh flowers for my dresser

Storage boxes or baskets for the TV stand

A few more yellow throw pillows for the bed

A hook so the hubbs can hang his guitar on the wall and get it off the floor

And maybe…Replace the huge tube TV with a refurbished flat screen version

After all this happens, then I’ll consider it done. But for now, this is the furthest we’ve gotten in truly making a room feel like OURS in the past few years. I’d say that’s an accomplishment in itself! Just don’t ask to see the inside of our closet!

I’d love to hear what you think, suggestions for making the room better, etc!

It makes my day when readers thank me for helping them make their homes greener through this site. I feel like I’m doing my job of making green decorating accessible to any and everyone. It makes me even happier when I get to see photos of their fully-decorated spaces. Kelli Taylor of Purple Tree Photography, is one such reader, and I hope you’re as stoked about her gorgeous nursery as I am. In her words:

I just finished my baby nursery that I wanted to submit. I found the eco-friendly crib and changing table thanks to you!! Other green items in the room include: paint, crib mattress, FLOR rug, changing table pad, redone rocking chair, sheets & changing table sheet.

Now for a breakdown of her shopping list:

Crib and changing table (filled with cloth diapers): The CUB Netto deal that I found on your blog! YAY – THANK YOU! (Note: This deal is no longer available)

Paint: Sherwin-Williams Harmony Zero VOC paint

Mattress and changing table pad: Organic Naturepedic from buy buy baby

Crib sheet & changing table sheet: Made of organic cotton and found at Babies’R'Us on clearance. Killer deal! I think the brand was Summer.

Rocking chair: Given to my Mom for her baby shower for me (before photo shown) and she painted it for me (same kind of paint as the room). I had the pad made.

Rug: FLOR carpet tiles

The light bulbs of course!

I don’t know about you guys, but I am loving the light blue and orange color scheme! It feels like creamsicle on a hot summer day, and it is completely unisex. In fact, I was so impressed by the room that I didn’t even think to ask Kelli whether she has a little boy or a girl until I started writing this post! She did a great job of taking a few eco- AND budget-friendly pieces and turning them into a minimal, soothing space that any infant would be happy to grow up in.

Oh, and if you are as impressed by these photos as I am, that’s because Kelli is a professional photographer. You can see more of her awesome work at Purple Tree Photography.

Do not republish any items from this feed without permission.

My Simple, but Festive, Thanksgiving Table

So…I promised I would decorate my table for Thanksgiving, and I just wanted to share the results of that. It feels a little skimpy, even to me, but I didn’t feel like doing a whole lot decorating after spending hours in the kitchen (which is exactly why I usually forgo decorating the table altogether) So I went for simple and festive, complete with fall colors.

We never bring our food to the table, preferring to keep it clear and load up our plates in the kitchen, so that’s why you don’t see any of our goodies. We tend to make a ton of different dishes, so bringing them to the table would mean a whole lot of clutter and mismatched servingware Maybe when we get a buffet console and some matching trays and platters, we’ll start bringing the food into the dining room.

Today’s room comes from one of my all-time favorite interior designers, Kelly LaPlante of Organic Interior Design. As the name of her firm implies, Kelly is a designer who focuses very specifically on green design, employing a combination of reuse with vintage and new, sustainably-made furnishings. I LOVE her style, and if I could have my way, I’d have her come take a look around my apartment and give me some pointers.

Here’s a room Kelly redesigned for a client who wanted to lighten and warm-up her old guest house/studio with cottage charm. Below the photos, you’ll find info about what makes the room green.

An antique bed and organic bedding with eco-silk throw by Lulan. Side tables, custom made from FSC wood and scrap marble, hold antique lamps and a vintage poster.

Extra storage was created by opening up the space under the stair case. Custom FSC flooring with a non-toxic finish replaced the old carpet.

A bird finial adds a touch of whimsy to the organic cotton draperies.

Recycled glass tiles by Oceanside Glass and a custom vanity made of FSC Certified wood.

An antique mirror hangs over the sink, in front of the window.

A custom bench and daybed with cushions and pillows made of organic latex and wool, covered in eco-fabrics.

Built-ins refurbished with a non-toxic finish and antique hardware. Custom shades made of organic cotton.

My favorite part of this redesign? The awesome bench and daybed by those gorgeous windows. Every time my husband and I do our hobby house touring, I always find at least one window under which I would put an upholstered bench so I could sit and work on my laptop while looking out at nature. What catches your eye about this space? Feel free to share your adoration comments below

You can see more of Kelly’s work in the Organic Interior Design portfolio, and you can also visit the site of another project Kelly is working on, The Green Grades.

I’ve realized something. Looking at individual furnishings is great, but it tends to be more inspirational to see these items in a room that is fully put together. That, and I just love drooling over photos of beautifully decorated rooms All of this is to introduce a new feature here at Green Your Decor: Friday Room Reveal. Every Friday, I will leave you for the weekend with a beautiful, eco-friendly, finished room to admire. Some will be from readers and regular people just like you and I, and others will be from bona fide interior designers. Hopefully, this will inspire you to finish your own rooms with eco-friendly decor and submit them to be featured. As soon as I finish my own rooms, I’ll show you those too

Without further adieu, here are the details for this week’s room: reader Kerri’s nursery for her little girl, Arabella. In Kerri’s words:

I’m an avid reader of your blog and would like to submit my daughter’s eco-friendly nursery to be featured on the site. Almost everything in the room is organic and/or eco-friendly. We live in a rental apartment, so we could not control the paint or wall to wall carpeting. However, we live in a green building so those materials are likely less toxic than in a traditional apartment building. We spent so many hours and months trying to create a truly non-toxic, yet beautiful, space for our daughter. It’s nice to know we succeeded!

I go to the extreme when I create my Green Rooms in a Box, insisting that every item included has some eco-friendly qualities whenever I can help it. Apparently, I’m not the only one who goes to these lengths to create green rooms.

At the ABC Kids Expo, the Greenguard Environmental Institute debuted a nursery decorated only with products certified by the organization as having minimal effect on indoor air quality. I know it’s just a trade show booth, but isn’t the result gorgeous? Click on the images to see larger versions.

I’ve been excited about bringing this Green Room in a Box from an idea to reality ever since I first posted it. It’s amazing how easy it is to get sidetracked on a decorating project. If it took my husband and I 2 months long to complete a patio makeover, I can imagine how long it would have taken us to do a kitchen!

To be fair, we wound up making cosmetic changes that we hadn’t anticipated, like buying bags and bags of mulch to prettify the planting beds and just generally make the front of the house look a lot better. That blew a giant hole in our original budget, so it took us longer than expected to re-budget for all the accessories we wanted to get. Coincidentally though, my mother returned from the Virgin Islands yesterday, so we were able to do the “big reveal” for her before I do it here for you, and I’m happy to say that she loved it! Click on the thumbnails above to see more photos of the finished design. RSS and email users, you may have to click through to the site in order to see the gallery.

Just so you’ll remember where we started, the original “before” photo is shown above. Most of the items we planned during the Green Room in a Box reveal did end up in the final design, with a couple of exceptions. So here’s the final shopping list and some notes:

Radiance Imperial Matchstick Rollup Shade from Walmart | $34.88/ ea.; $69.76 for 2 | Made of bamboo. I hand-painted the flowers I originally envisioned onto the shades. What do you think of the result? I plan to post a tutorial on Monday.

Recycled Green Lemonade Carafe and Glass 5-Piece Set from Walmart | $19.98 | Made of recycled glass.

3 Piece Acacia Bistro Set with Cushions from Walmart | $148 | Made of FSC-certified acacia wood.

Coir Coastal Doormat from Target | $14.99 | Made of coir, which comes from discarded coconut husks | We changed the color scheme of the room, so this one no longer made sense. We also wanted one that was a little bit more affordable, so we opted for this simple, but colorful design from Target.

Solar Lights from Walmart | $4/ea.; $16 for 4 | Solar-powered | They aren’t shown in the photo because we haven’t yet figured out how to actually get them to work, but we did buy them (Not available at Walmart.com; Only in stores)

Sheraton Low Deep Seating Chair from Walmart | $146/ea.; $292 for 2 | Made of FSC-certified Eucalyptus wood.

Plantation Patterns Outdoor Pillows from Home Depot | $12.49/ea.; $37.47 for 3 | The pillows we originally wanted from Sears were no longer available when I finally went to order them, so we got these from Home Depot instead. The online price is $30 for a set of 2, but in the store, we paid $12.49 per pillow. And remember how I said I couldn’t find any eco-friendly outdoor pillows? On Monday, I’ll reveal how I did find some…2 days after I had bought these pillows and all the matching accessories

Plastic Planters | As I mentioned my mom had 2 of these for a few years. We painted them and added flowers to really spruce up the space. And as you can see, we added lots of other potted plants, herbs and flowers. Actually, my husband did. I may have the eye for the design, but I do NOT have a green thumb

Recycled Plastic Sunburst Rug from Bambeco | $35 | Made of recycled plastic | As soon as I saw this rug and how beautifully it coordinated with the pillows we chose, I had to have it! In the product photo on the Bambeco site, the rug looks purple. In person with an up-close view, it looks purple because the rug is made of a combination of red and blue woven plastic. It still looks great though! | BONUS: Use coupon code “gyd09” to get 20% off any order from Bambeco! (aff)

TOTAL: $633.20 | The final cost is about $20 higher than it was originally intended to be, and with supplies (a few cans of spray paint and a small paint sample, a pair of hedge clippers, etc.), the total cost (excluding the mulch) is probably right at $700. Not bad, eh?

So what do you think of the final design? We still plan to paint the front door black (if my mother will let us) and stain the concrete patio so it looks like the discoloration is on purpose…lol. Leave your compliments comments below!
