I’ve been a little lazy with my gift wrapping this year, and I’ve used more paper than I’d like. So for the rest of my wrapping, I’m determined to get creative and reuse gift bags, boxes, fabric and anything else I can find. Here are some of my favorite green gift wrapping ideas:

Use boxes and bags from last year

My family has been reusing the same gift bags and boxes for years now. As we unwrap (or inbox or unbag) gifts on Christmas morning, I neatly fold them up and put them in a stack. I also save bags and boxes from birthdays, Valentine’s Day, etc., all in my gift wrap bin. As a result, we are able to use the same gently used bags and boxes over and over. We simply replace the tags, or use the same bag for the same person so the existing tag still applies

Use what you already have

Before you purchase another roll of wrapping paper, look around the house to see what you already have. Chances are, you’ve ordered some gifts online and had them shipped to you. I’ve personally received a LOT of boxes over the past month or two. Many of them came stuffed with paper instead of packing peanuts. I’ve been reusing a lot of that paper to wrap gifts.

To wrap the gift above, I reused two sheets of crinkled brown paper from a package I had received (and I actually like the crinkled look). Then I used some tulle that I had leftover from a tutu a made my niece for Christmas. I simply wrapped two colors of tulle around the package and tied them in bows. Easy, and beautiful! (NOTE: Please ignore the extremely blue coloring of these photos. I forgot to change the white balance on my camera when I was taking them )

There are other ways to reuse that brown paper, though. I used it to wrap another gift, then used a couple of craft sponges to paint circles on it in our chosen Christmas color scheme (turquoise, gold and lime green). I also used those colors to paint a gift tag that I printed for free! Looking for more free printable gift tags? Click here or scroll down. The finished look is handmade and luxe at the same time. And it took only a few minutes.

You can also take a cue from green guru Danny Seo and use newspaper to wrap gifts. Believe it or not, it will curl much like ribbon. This is a great way to wrap a bottle of wine. Simply put the bottle in the middle and fold the newspaper up around it, then secure it at the top with a rubber band. Cut the excess into strips and use scissors to curl it just like you would curl ribbon. Makes a really festive host gift! I would show you the video, but it looks like Danny has removed it.

Lastly, you know all those tote bags and shoe boxes you have in your closet that you never use? They make great gift packaging

Wrap a gift in a gift

See that gift above? It’s not wrapped in just any piece of fabric. That’s actually a pillow cover. I put the other gifts inside it, then carefully folded and wrapped it with ribbon. Of course, this works best when the other gifts are small, but it can work in other situations as well.

For example, I put together a personalized gift basket for someone using a $2 basket from Goodwill. I was trying to figure out how to conceal the items in the basket, and I remembered that the recipient has been wearing a lot of scarves lately. Inspiration! I made her the circle scarf that you’ll find on the DIY gift ideas page in the Green Gift Guide. I then used the scarf to enclose the gifts inside the basket, then tied it all up with a stray piece of tulle (see below). Easy peasy, and she’s getting 2 gifts in one!

This can work with sooooo many gifts: A recipe book wrapped in a tea towel. A pair of earrings inside a decorative, lacquered box that the recipient could display on their dresser or a bookshelf. Candles wrapped inside fabric napkins. An organic stuffed animal wrapped inside a baby blanket. Anything at all inside a reusable shopping bag (like a ChicoBag, Envirosax or RuMe bag). The possibilities are endless. (aff)

Use paper just for the kids

Let’s be honest — part of the Christmas magic for kids is tearing their gifts open with wild abandon. It’s just not the same with a gift bag, or if they have to carefully untie a piece of fabric. Adults and teens will be better equipped with the patience required to open a carefully wrapped gift.

So if you’re going to use paper for wrapping, use it just for the kids — and make sure that paper is either made of recycled materials or at least recyclable. Even Walmart, Target and Dollar Tree offer recycled wrapping paper if you take the time to look. And please stay away from shiny foil, velvet flocked, or glitter-covered paper, because it is generally not recyclable. Simple printed paper is best.

Every year, my husband and I (ie. mostly me) pick a color scheme for our Christmas decor. This year, we chose turquoise and gold (with a tiny bit of lime green added for a little extra pizzazz). The problem? We owned exactly two ornaments in any of those colors. In years past, we have always incorporated silver into our Christmas color palette. Not a speck of gold. Ever. So what’s a girl to do? Buy a whole tree’s worth of ornaments? You know me better than that

First, I swapped ornaments with my mother, who had tons of gold decor, but is decorating in silver this year. That’s what I call a stroke of good luck. I came home with a whole box full of goodies. Next, my daughter and I got down to the business of making our own ornaments. I was inspired by some owl ornaments I found on Pinterest:

Owl ornament tutorial

I’d been saving toilet paper rolls for weeks in anticipation of trying this, and it couldn’t have gone better. Since the available tutorial is in Spanish, I’ll walk you through the steps. Kids can definitely help with this.

1. At the top of a toilet paper tube, push down on opposite sides so they fold and meet in the middle. Squeeze the peaks that will be created by these folds. If you squeeze hard enough, you shouldn’t need glue, tape or anything else to hold it in this position.

2. Paint the tubes however you want. We used turquoise and lime green. Let them dry for at least an hour.

3. Use a black permanent marker to draw owls on the painted tubes. If you’re afraid of messing up, first draw lightly in pencil, then follow with marker. Here’s a tip: start with two large circles for the eyes and work your way out from there. You can also Google “owl illustrations” for some inspiration.

4. Thread a needle and tie it off. Push the needle through one peak at the top of the toilet paper tube (the owl’s “ear”). Then push it through the other peak and meet with a little length in the middle. Cut off the excess. Tie the ends of the thread to create a loop. That’s it!

We had lots of fun coming up with different ways to draw the owls so that no two are alike. One of mine is shown at left, and my daughter’s owl is on the right

Flower ornament tutorial

Wanting some variety, I decided to try another toilet paper/paper towel tube ornament design. I’ve had the image below from Design Sponge saved in my inspiration folder literally for years, but I’d never gotten around to trying it. That photo was the inspiration for this ornament. And it is super easy to make.

1. Paint the toilet paper or paper towel roll in the color of your choice (or leave it unpainted if you’d like).

2. Once the paint is dry, flatten the tube vertically as shown in the photo below. Then turn it horizontally and cut it into strips about 1/2″ to 1″ wide. You’ll see that the strips will open up into petal-like shapes.

3. Stack 6 or 7 flattened strips together. About 1/8″ from the bottom of the stack, push a threaded needle through all of the strips. You’ll need to do this one at a time, but keep them close together. I showed just two so you can easily see how they will attach. Loop around the bottom of the stack and push the thread through all the strips again. Pull the thread taut and begin to fan the petals out to form a flower. Push the thread through one side of the very first petal, but not through the second side. Make sure that the thread is tight and your flower looks as you want it and tie off the end of the thread. Cut off the excess.

4. If this is secure enough for you, you can stop here. I chose to reinforce mine by winding thread around the center of the flower, through the middle of the petals. See the closeup below to see what I mean.

5. The upside of this design is that you don’t need a hook to hang it on the tree. Simply open a petal and hang it on a branch. Easy peasy! Although I’m thinking I may go back and paint the inside of the petals too, so it’s all blue. Or I may be lazy and leave them as is

Miscellaneous other ornaments

I had lots of leftover bits and pieces from my daughter’s peacock Halloween costume, and I needed more blue on the tree. I made a couple of additional, very simple ornaments from costume remnants.

1. Feather ornaments.

I had some leftover pieces of feather boa from the costume. I cut lengths of boa at about 4 inches long. At the 2 inch mark (in the center), I simply tied a piece of string, looped it twice, pulled it taut, and tied the excess in a loop at the top. You want to know the best thing about this one? After I made these, I saw identical pre-made feather ornaments (same color and all) at Hobby Lobby for $7 a pop! I made 5 of them for FREE

2. Fabric strip bows.

All I did was cut 2″ x 14″ strips of fabric and tied them at the ends of a few branches (this was after I ran out of actual ribbon…lol)

3. Ribbon star ornaments a la Martha Stewart

Mine didn’t look like hers at all — they were more like tiny wreaths. Still I like them. To make them more like Martha’s, stiffer ribbon would be a better idea. I used slippery satin ribbon, so it was difficult to get each knot to keep its shape. Still, each of these took about 5 minutes.

The Finished Tree

This is the finished look. We filled out some more blue with a couple of packs of store-bought ornaments. So we decorated the whole tree for about $15. Woo hoo!

Last year, my husband and I went to a local Christmas tree farm to cut down our own tree. This year, however, we live in a different city, and the farm that is closest to us ran out of trees really early. The next nearest farm was a half hour away via the Interstate, and the idea of lugging a tree on top of our tiny Honda Accord for a half hour didn’t sit well with us. So we got real tree from Whole Foods instead. I was hoping we could find a retailer selling Georgia trees, but EVERY retailer we asked had had their trees delivered from farms in North Carolina. Not quite “local,” but apparently as good as it was going to get. And a real tree, as a general rule, is better than a fake one — particularly if it comes from a tree farm where the trees are replanted every year.

My husband picked the tree all by his lonesome, and I was really impressed with his choice. The tree is full and fragrant, and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. Of course, it takes up quite a bit of space in our living room, but I still love it!

As you can see, I had to improvise some orange ornaments, since I couldn’t find any anywhere. And I still have a few ideas up my sleeve, since the think the tree still needs “something.” The tree is so huge that our small collection of ornaments feels sparse to me. So this afternoon, we’re collecting pine cones and a couple of other items for some ornament making! I’ll share the results!

I want to feature you!

I’d love to see photos of your Christmas trees, all decked out. If you submit a photo of your tree, along with a brief description (and a link back to your site, if you have one), I’ll post all the photos I receive on Friday. I can’t wait to see what you’ve done!

THE DECORATE GREEN SERIES

I have a confession to make: I generally do very little decorating for the holidays outside of our Christmas tree. It’s not that I don’t want to. It’s just that having lived in a series of apartments and other people’s homes for most of my adult life has made me less than enthusiastic about spending a lot of time on my holiday decor. This year though, I plan to do more holiday decorating, both inside and out. How much more, I don’t know, but I’ll share stylish, eco-friendly ideas with you as I refine my plan.

This year, for the first time ever, we have a fireplace and a mantel where we can hang our Christmas stockings. In years past, we’ve used ledges, wall hooks and even window sills since we never had a mantel. Last year, we bought two stockings from Amenity in their silver print for my husband and I. But the kids were still using cheap felt stockings we’d gotten from a dollar store years before. This year, I was determined to give them better stockings. I was also determined to get far, far away from the traditional red, white and green color scheme that I can’t seem to avoid, no matter what I do.

The color palette we chose for Christmas 2010? Silver, white and orange.

A few weeks ago, I saw some Christmas stockings at Target that were made of cable-knit sweater fabric, and I was inspired. I thought I had taken a picture with my phone, but I can’t seem to find it. In any case, I knew I could make similar ones myself. And if you’d like to do the same, here’s a step, by step tutorial for making a sweater stocking. Keep in mind that I am no seamstress, and all I can really do is sew a straight line, so these directions are in layman’s terms. I know very little about seam allowances, specific stitches, etc.

You’ll Need:

An old turtleneck sweater (I got mine from Goodwill for $2)

Coordinating scrap fabric for lining and hanging strap

Sewing machine OR a needle & thread (and tons of patience)

Scissors

Pins

Step 1.

Cut the turtleneck off your sweater as close to the seam as possible. Set it aside.

Step 2.

Lay another stocking (or this template) on top of the part of the sweater you’d like to use for the stocking and cut about an inch outside it for your stocking shape. You’ll need to cut through both front and back of the sweater. Note: I personally knew I wanted to make 2 stockings from of each sweater, so I folded the sweater in half. I aligned an old stocking with the edge of the sweater (side seam) and used it as a guide to cut the shape. This also meant that I could use the side seam as a seam in the finished stocking, giving me one less edge to sew. I also aligned the top of the stocking with the bottom edge of the sweater so I’d have a nice straight edge there.

Step 3.

Open up the stocking shape. Lay it, face up, on top of a piece of scrap fabric that you’d like to use to line the inside of your stocking. The scrap fabric should be face down. Cut out the same shape from the scrap fabric.

Step 4.

It’s time for that turtleneck you cut off earlier. Cut the turtleneck open at the seam in the back. If you’re making just one stocking, you’re ready for the next step. If you’re making 2 stockings from 1 sweater, fold the turtleneck in half horizontally and cut it in half.

Step 5.

Position your sweater fabric face down and your lining face up. Make sure that it is open, and not folded into the final stocking shape.. Lay the turtleneck at the top of your sweater fabric and your lining fabric. Slip 1/2 inch of the raw edge (the part that was attached to the neck of the sweater) between the sweater fabric and lining fabric at the top (the part of the stocking that will be open. Align it with the edge and pin it all the way across. Cut off any excess that you have beyond the width of the stocking.

Step 6.

Stitch the turtleneck between the two pieces of fabric all the way across.

Step 7.

Cut a piece of scrap fabric 6″ long and 2.5″ wide. Fold it in half, so you have a folded piece that is 6″ long and 1.25″ wide. Iron it down so your fold will hold. Sew along the open edge along the whole 6″. This will become your hanging strap. Turn the 6″ by 1.5″ tube of fabric inside out, and iron it flat again.

Step 8.

Fold the stocking shape. The sweater fabric should be on the inside, with the lining fabric on the outside. Find the center of the stocking. Pin one end of your strap to folded edge on one side of the stocking, with the seam of your strap facing up. Then fold the strap over the top of your stocking and pin it in the same place on the other side. In both cases, you want to go through only 2 layers of fabric — one layer of lining and one layer of sweater. Sew the strap to the stocking shape, right along the seam where you attached the turtleneck (NOT at the very top of the stocking).

I forgot to take a photo of this step on the orange stockings, but you can see what it looks like below with the strap sewn onto one the white stocking. I didn’t turn the strap inside out because I was lazy

Step 9.

Now that you have your turtleneck cuff and hanging strap attached, you can close up the stocking. Line up the edges of the folded stocking and pin around the bottom and one side. You can avoid pinning the folded edge (no need to stitch that…yay!) and the top, which will remain open. Sew around the edges that you pinned, being sure to sew through all layers of fabric.

NOTES: Thinner sweaters work better for machine sewing, which I learned the hard way. If you don’t’ mind sewing by hand, feel free to use a thick cable knit sweater. If you want this project to go quickly, a thinner, tighter cable knit will be a better fit for your sewing machine, since you’ll have to sew through 2 layers of fabric. I did the orange ones by hand (and not very well, as you can see in the photo below…lol)

Step 10.

Turn your stocking inside out. Fold down the cuff, and hang!

As you can see in the image at top and the one below, I made 3 of these. My sewing machine died on me when I was making the second white stocking.

Tips

Feel free to embellish these however you see fit. I made a rosette from rolled fabric and hot glued it to the top corner of the white stocking so it would better coordinate with the orange ones. You can make sweater balls that you can attach with needle and thread, cut shapes or letters from fabric, etc. Use your imagination to really make them yours!

If you make one of these, I’d love to see how yours turn out. I learned by trial and error, and I’m sure there are better ways to do this!

I know that we haven’t even reached Thanksgiving yet, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned about finding holiday gifts, it’s that it’s best done early (especially when shopping online). Hence, the Green Your Decor Green Gift Guide is live!

This year, in addition to all the fabulous gifts you can buy from green companies and artisans for everyone on your list, I also added another category: Gifts you can Make Yourself.

Given the state of the economy, everyone is looking for ways to save a little extra money, and I want to help however I can. These gifts can be made either from things you likely already have around the house, or from materials that are readily available and relatively inexpensive.

Other than that, you’ll still find great green gifts you’ll love to give in every budget, and I’ll be adding more over the next few weeks. Have a suggestion for a gift? Feel free to submit it now! I’ll credit you if it is featured! For brands, Etsy shops and retail store owners, there are opportunities for you to get involved too. Feel free to submit your product for consideration for the gift guide, and I’ll contact you with more information.

Save Even More!

I also recently updated the functionality of the Deals & Coupons page to help you save even more. The top of the page now features a variety of eco-friendly, time sensitive deals from sites like:

Pure Citizen**

Roozt**

Eversave

Groupon

Gilt Groupe

Rue La La

Mamapedia

Blissmo**

More to come!

NOTE: The sites with two stars next to their name (**) feature ONLY eco-friendly products and services.

Instead of having to visit each of these sites individually, you can find all the best green deals here. These sites often offer products and services for insane deals, sometimes up to 80% off, but only for a short time. Each day, you’ll be able to quickly scan the page to see when these sites have eco-friendly deals. You’ll find everything from organic clothing to to jewelry, toys and even deals on eco-friendly travel (when available). You’ll also be able to see when the sales and deals are ending, so you can decide if it’s worth it to act now.

This is a great place to find gift ideas as well, and you can save a lot of money. A few days ago, I took advantage of a special at Eversave that offered $35 gift certificates to green retailer Wild Dill for just $12! I bought two of them that I’ll use to buy holiday gifts for a couple kids on my list.

Hopefully the coupon page and gift guide will be useful to you this year!

I love the idea of a wreath, but I’ve never really been a fan of the way they look. Maybe that’s because most of the wreaths I usually see on people’s doors are made from plastic, fake pine needles lit up by too many lights or covered in fake snow and cheesy holiday characters. If you agree with me, here are some more unconventional, but still stylish and eco-friendly options for your door:

Yarn Wreaths from Green Eyed Monster. There are no hard and fast rules about decorating in shades in red and green. In fact, I’m not a big fan of that color combination at all. Why not a charcoal gray wreath, a beautiful purple or even argyle? The upside of these simple, non-holiday-specific wreaths, handmade by independent artist Itz Fitz, is that you can use them any time of year in any room where they make sense. Available in 12″, 14″ and 16″. $40-65.

BONUS! Get 20% off your order at Green Eyed Monster with coupon code “YDTGEM.” Exp. 12/1/10

Go Square: Fresh Myrtle Wreath Frame or Greek Chili Pepper Square Wreath from Organic Bouquet. Wreaths are traditionally round, but I love the look of these square wreaths from Organic Bouquet. The simple design of the Myrtle Frame Wreath features just one type of leaves, which makes it feel much more modern than traditional evergreen wreaths. The Chili Pepper Wreath will give you some traditional holiday color in a non-traditional design. Myrtle Wreath, $64.95; Chili Pepper Wreath, $48.95 (aff)

Felted Wool Wreath from Viva Terra. This wreath screams holidays, but not in a cheesy way. The winter white and red color scheme is traditional with modern twist, and I just can get enough of the two cute birds sitting in the middle of the circle. $59

Felt Peace Wreath from Branch Home. Apparently, you can’t go wrong with felt, and this wreath kicks the cool factor up a notch. What’s not to love about a wreath shaped like a peace sign? And did I forget to mention that it’s handmade by a group of Fair Trade artisans in India of wool and bamboo? Also available in green. $98

Make Your Own

I love these ideas from Good Housekeeping for homemade wreaths made of dad’s old ties or all those corks you have laying around. Find tutorials for both projects (and a few others) here.

Next week, I’ll post a tutorial for the wreath I made! It’s really easy to do with stuff you may already have at home! Make sure you don’t miss it!
Overall, I have to say this has been a pretty great year for Green Your Decor, as well as for me and my family. So I just wanted to take time out this holiday season to wish all my wonderful, loyal readers a Merry Green Christmas. More than any material thing you can give or receive, the most important part of the season is sharing love with everyone around you. So here’s a little bit of mine

And remember, recycle all that wrapping paper and packaging, eat and drink with reusable plates and cups, and unplug the lights before you go to bed I couldn’t resist leaving you a few green holiday tips!

See you next week with more great content!

One of my favorite parts of the holidays is getting to put up a Christmas tree. This year has been particularly special because not only do we have a real tree: We got to select it and cut it down ourselves from a local tree farm. I wanted to see what everyone else was doing for their tree decor, particularly for those people who opted for a real tree or a tree alternative. Here are some of my favorite submissions and found photos:

Kirsten

I thought I’d share with you the tree my folks have every year. They have a southern Illinois tree farm flock a tree for them. Flocking is a sticky white spray that turns the tree white. It’s old school. Lol. My mom used to have a tree like that when she was a kid. We all love it. We go to a lot of effort to get it…driving an hour each way to the farm! But it’s soooo pretty! My mom chooses a color scheme every year for the lights and ornaments. This year it’s blue.

Carol

Carol Hoenig put a special spin on her tree decor for a great photo: One is a tongue-in-cheek shot with some of my hats as “ornaments” since I’m known for wearing hats all year round. It’s a real hat tree! The other photo is the tree fully decorated for Christmas with my cocker spaniel, Scout.

Amelia

Amelia, who owns a store called Green Alternatives, stepped completely outside the box for a “tree” that should really inspire you. It shows how a little ingenuity can turn almost any object into a Christmas centerpiece: My husband and I own an eco-friendly store so we practice what we preach. We just put up our tree and instead of cutting down a live tree, we used a ladder (literally). I know it’s not real, but it’s eco-friendly and is decorated with led lights to minimize energy consumption.

Sherry & John

Last, but not least, I have to feature the beautiful tree decorated by two of my favorite bloggers, Sherry & John Petersik from Young House Love. While they do have an artificial tree (bah, humbug…lol), I couldn’t resist sharing the way they decorated their tree. Rather than opting for just the standard holiday fare, they cut up and dried lemons and oranges, then hung them as ornaments. Aren’t they beautiful alongside their gorgeous orange and green balls? Love it! In fact, I think I’m going to try this next year. Read more about the Petersiks’ tree & Christmas decor here.

Want to see your tree featured? Submit your photo and story from now through Christmas Eve and I’ll add them to this post. Happy Holidays!

Instead of rehashing all that information, I just want to point you in the direction of those archived posts and the very helpful comments that they received, since the information presented in them is still relevant and accurate. I love all the information that was added by the readers that I didn’t think of when I was writing the series. I also have some new resources that I’ll present here to help you in greening your holiday season.

If you are still shopping for gifts, don’t forget to visit our Green Gift Guide, which is chock full of ideas for everyone on your list, from your husband to the kids and even the family pet! And keep coming back this week and next for some giveaways from retailers and manufacturers that are featured in the gift guide! The giveaways will be short so they can end before Christmas, so don’t miss them!

NEW RESOURCES

As I mentioned, I have discovered some great new resources since last year, and I’d love to share them with you.

Fabric gift wrap by Chewing the Cud

I’ve always taken great pride in my gift wrapping. Now that I’ve decided to forgo paper on all gifts except a few for the kids, I’m having to go the extra mile with my creativity. I LOVE these fabric gift wraps from Chewing the Cud! These beautiful patterns are printed on organic cotton with soy-based inks, and they are absolutely lovely! Can you imagine how happy someone would be to get a gift wrapped in one of these gorgeous prints? Each wrap measures 28″ x 28″, so the can accommodate gifts of reasonable sizes. Price: $10/ea.

Goody Green Bag

It’s no longer hard to find reusable shopping bags. But if you plan on using them to wrap presents, why not inject a little style, color and fun? Goody Green Bags offer a dose of all three. Price: $9.95/ea; $45.95 for a sample pack of 6 bags

Recycled Sail Stockings

We don’t have a mantel on which to hang our stockings, but if you do, these versions by Etsy seller reiter8 are awesome. As the name implies, they are made in the U.S. from upcycled boat sails. How’s that for a nautical holiday? Price: $46-48
As I discover new resources, I will add them to this post. In the meantime, I am looking for photos of readers’ fully decorated Christmas trees. I have a few submissions, but I’m looking for more. Want to see your tree featured at Green Your Decor with a link back to your blog (if you have one)? Submit your story and tree photos now!

This year — our first under our own roof in a long time — we insisted on having a real Christmas tree. But not just ANY real tree. We wanted a tree from a local farm. One that we knew would replant all the trees that were cut down. One that is a whole lot more sustainable and responsible than an artificial tree. On the way to take my daughter to preschool about a week ago, I spied a sign for a farm not far from home. So on Saturday afternoon, we headed out there with high hopes that we’d find the perfect tree. We were not disappointed!

As soon as we arrived, the owner of the farm greeted us, handed us a saw and told us we could pick whatever tree we wanted. My husband, daughter and I walked nearly the entire farm trying to find a tree we wanted to take home. This wasn’t because of a lack of variety, but because we were trying to find the right combination of size, color and price. Once we found it, my wonderful husband laid down on the cold Georgia clay to cut it down.

Pick your tree species

If you are interested in getting a real tree, but don’t want to deal with shedding needles, you’ll be happy to learn that many farms plant several species of pine — unlike the single type you’d find from a seller in a parking lot or at your local grocery store. I did my readers (and myself) a disservice by forgetting ask the name of the species we chose, but we picked this particular tree for it’s deep green color and the fact that it doesn’t lose any needles. The only shedding our tree produced resulted from trying to get it through our front door.

As you can see, the tree remains bare because I still have to get our Christmas decor out of storage. But even without a single ornament or light, we love it! It is just the right height, full in all the right places, and smells divine! I can remember my mother buying pine-scented air freshener to make our home “smell like Christmas” when we had put up a fake tree. Aaah…memories of “winter” in the Caribbean, where it’s 80 degrees in December

What to do after Christmas

Anyway, I can bet we’ll be heading back to the same farm, year after year, to get a beautiful, locally- and responsibly-grown tree. And when the season has come and gone, we’ll take our happy little tree to “Bring One for the Chipper,” an annual event by Keep Georgia Beautiful that is held throughout the state. Through January 9, residents can take their trees to one of hundreds of designated drop-off locations to have their trees turned into mulch, which in turn will be used for playgrounds, local government beautification projects and individual yards.

If you’re in Georgia, visit Earth911.com and search how to recycle “Christmas Trees” in your zip code to find a drop location near you. Readers who live in other states can do the same to find out if there’s a similar program in your area, or visit the Christmas Trees page for more information on recycling.

Stay tuned for more photos when the tree (and the rest of our living room) has been decorated! Do you have a real tree? Submit a photo to be featured in a special post on Green Your Decor in coming weeks that shows off readers’ Christmas trees!

If you’ve been following the Dreaming of a Green Christmas series, you should be well on your way to having a greener Christmas than you ever have before. But there’s still one important element to consider: Gift giving. Because let’s face it — people are going to shop for Christmas, and that stack of gifts under your tree is as much a part of your decor as the tree itself. But don’t fall prey to the rampant consumerism and wastefulness that comes with Christmas. When you do give, dress your gifts in eco-friendly ways.

Wrap them up in bags

Second to the ridiculous amount of packaging that so many gifts use (especially toys), wrapping paper is one of the most wasteful aspects of the Christmas season. You slap it on gifts, the recipient tears it open in a few seconds, and in the trash it goes. Not exactly a lot of bang for your buck. Bags are much more environmentally-friendly. I’m not talking about the laminated paper gift bags you can find at every store. I’m talking about reusable shopping bags. Talk about a gift that keeps on giving! The recipient gets 2 gifts in one: The actual gift that you put inside the bag, and the bag itself. And you help encourage them to go green throughout the year by replacing plastic grocery bags. And you don’t have to sacrifice style. You can opt for plain, solid-color reusable bags if you’d like, but many companies make bags in beautiful patterns that will make your gifts beautiful! Here are some great eco-bags to consider:

RuMe bags. Designed in the U.S. and made in a Fair Trade factory in South Korea. They come in beautiful patterns, including a few in Christmas-themed colors and patterns. Folds into an included pouch. $9.85 for a single bag or $22.50 for a set of 3.

Envirosax bags. Made in China under Fair Trade guidelines. Most of the bags are made of polyester for durability, but they also have a line of pricier bags made of bamboo, linen and hemp. Have a great selection of beautiful prints, including kid-friendly designs. Price: $8.50 for single polyester bags and $24.95 for organic fabrics.

ChicoBags. Made of polyester for durability. Availability in a great selection of solid colors in two styles and fold into an attached pouch. I have one of these, and they are very spacious. Price: $5-8/ea.

Baggu bags. Available in solids and beautiful, holiday-appropriate prints. There is also a collection of bags featuring Barack Obama, so give a little piece of history. Price: $6-14/ea. Discounts available for purchase of multiple bags.

Use towels, scarves and fabric

Gift wrap doesn’t have to be made of paper. You can use anything made of a flexible material that is large enough to cover your gift. This works whether or not you have a box. If you do have a box, wrap it like wrapping paper, affix the ends with double-stick tape or safety pins, and tie a ribbon around the box. If it is awkwardly shaped (like a bottle of wine), wrap the towel around it like a satchel, bunch it at the top and tie the ribbon around the excess. Here are some suggestions:

Use stylish kitchen towels like these beautiful organic towels from Ferm Living. If you’re giving a kitchen-related gift that is relatively small, wrap it in a beautiful towel and tie a nice length of matching ribbon around it. Price: $14-19

For the lovely lady on your gift list, wrap her gift in a beautiful scarf from your personal collection or an organic option like this one made of organic cotton by Alena Hennessy. Price: $35.

Giving a gift to the host of a party, someone who likes to sew, or an decor addict like me? Wrap their gift in a piece of beautiful fabric, preferably made of sustainable materials like like organic cotton, hemp, recycled plastic bottles, linen or modal. You can find many options in the Green Your Decor fabrics category, but I am especially fond of these lovely patterns from Umbrella Prints.

You can buy fabric gift wrap kits the same way you’d buy paper. I LOVE this Kimono print gift wrap from Cut + Paste, and there are other prints in the same style. It’s not made of a sustainable fabric, but it’s still more eco-friendly than paper gift wrap. Comes with fabric & tying ribbon. Price: $13

Use a lovely box or container

While traditional holiday gift boxes are reusable for a time, an even better option is a beautiful box or container — the type you would display on a shelf in your home. They will appreciate what’s inside, but they will also appreciate the container they can reuse again and again. You can give it as is, or you can wrap it in some beautiful ribbon.

Buy recycled gift wrap

If you decide you’d prefer to use paper, there are dozens of stylish designs in both gift wrap and gift bags that are made of recycled paper, some of which are also printed with soy- or water-based inks. The great thing about recycled wrapping paper is that it is also recyclable, as long as it is not laminated or metallic. Also avoid paper with raised embellishments or foil accents. Here are some of my personal favorites:

Fish Lips Paper Designs recycled wrapping paper. Made of 100% recycled paper and printed with soy-based inks. Available in beautiful everyday prints, as well as some holiday-specific prints. Price: $4/sheet.

Whimsy Press recycled gift wrap. These double-sided sheets of gift wrap are made of 100% recycled paper and printed with soy-based inks. Price: $5.50/sheet

Amy Butler recycled gift wrap. If you love Amy Butler’s fabrics, you’ll adore her gift wrap. It is made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper. Price: $12.75/roll

A few more resources:

Blooming Wrapping Paper (embedded with seeds you can plant)

Earth Love’n Paper Products recycled wrapping paper

Recycled Paper Gift Bags from Gaiam

Reuse old paper

You can wrap gifts with any large piece of paper you have on hand, including:

Comics from the newspaper

Newspaper and magazine pages

Brown paper bags

Old maps

Wallpaper scraps

Your kids’ artwork

Make gift tags or buy handmade

If you have a computer and a printer, you can make your own gift tags. Search the web for “gift tag template” and find one that you like. I particularly love the downloadable tags shown below from “SewTakeaHike.” Download this one, or any other that you find and like and print it out on recycled cardstock, which you can find at your nearest office supply store or super store. Etsy is also a great resource for handmade gift tags. I did a search for “recycled gift tags” and found literally hundreds of beautiful options.

Use baubles instead of bows

To top your gifts, you don’t have to use cheap plastic ribbons. In fact, your gift topper is an opportunity to get really creative. In addition to fabric, not paper, ribbon, you can use Christmas ornaments, costume jewelry, hair barrettes, key chains, magnets, pins — pretty much any small, reusable item that you can think of. It helps, though, if the object is useful (like a Christmas ornament or a hair barrette). Otherwise, it will simply turn into more “stuff” that the recipient might throw away.

You can also use biodegradable items found in nature, like fresh flowers, pine cones, branches or leaves of fragrant herbs.

Search the web for eco-ideas

I have found some awesome, eco-friendly gift wrapping ideas around the web. Here are a few of my favorites:

Make a D.I.Y. Eco-Happy Pom Pom Gift Topper from plastic grocery bags {Creature Comforts}

Make recycled gift bags {CraftBits}

Now that you know what type of tree and lights to get and how to deck out the tree and your home in sustainable style, you’re probably going to be having guests over for the holidays. There’s no need to sacrifice your green lifestyle because you have company. In fact, you can use it is an opportunity to show your guests how stylish and practical eco-living can be.

Ditch the disposables

When you have holiday guests, you’re likely going to be feeding more people than you normally do. That’s no excuse to use paper plates or plastic cups. Think of it as an opporunity to show off your best dinnerware or use your “good” dishes. At my house, we use all our dishes all the time. But you may have some squirreled away in a box or cabinet that you don’t use. Now is a great time to pull them out. If you do want something that requires a little less cleanup at the end, opt for compostable bamboo plates or tableware made of palm leaves. Here are some eco-options:

Bamboo Veneerware Plates. Made of sustainable, organically grown bamboo with no bleaches or dyes, and they are compostable. Price: $7.50 for a set of 8.

VerTerra Leaf Dinnerware. Made of fallen leaves and water, chemical-free, non-toxic, biodegradable, renewable, microwave- and refrigerator-safe, reusable and compostable. Price: $11.99 for a set of 10.

Plates with Purpose. Made of recycled glass, hand-colored, finished and bent, and a portion of each sale benefits a non-profit organization that helps those in need or provides a service or greater quality of life. The designs on the plates were created by the organizations that the proceeds benefit. Price: $36-88.

Use fabric napkins

Disposable napkins may be convenient, but just remember that paper comes from trees. Is it really worth it to cut down some trees to wipe your hands and mouth after dinner? Opt for cloth napkins. If you’re going to buy new, try to buy sustainable fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, linen or recycled fabrics. However, any cloth napkins are more eco-friendly than paper napkins or paper towels. Here are some options:

Make your own from old button-down shirts. Click here for simple instructions.

Head to your nearest thrift store. You can almost always find stacks and stacks of used napkins in great condition. For the holidays, try finding napkins in festive colors that match your decor: Think red, green, gold, silver, or white. Teal, turquoise and purple are great non-traditional holiday colors that can be beautiful if you use them well.

Boxwood Goods Soy and Hemp Cocktail Napkins. Made of natural hemp. Price: $25 for a set of 4.

Encourage guests to recycle

Our recycling bins are essentially old boxes and plastic containers. Not exactly something I would want to display to guests. However, you will want your guests to continue your tradition of recycling, so you’ll need to put them in a place that is easily accessible. If you have stylish recycling bins, you’re already set. But if you’re like me, and you’re improvising here are a couple of tips for making your bins look better.

Cover them in a festive wrapping paper. It is greener if you’re using leftover paper from years past, or paper made of 100% recycled content.

Wrap them in a beatiful piece of fabric. You can reuse and old sheet, table cloth or curtain for this purpose if you don’t have fabric close at hand.

Use empty woven baskets instead of traditional recycling bins.

If you asked my mother, she would tell you how excited I used to get about decorating our home for Christmas when I was little. Not only would I want to help trim the tree and hang garland in the living room — I would also grab ornaments and other decor to turn my room into a Christmas wonderland. I don’t get as excited these days, but many of you do. If you are one of those people, these tips will ensure that your Christmas excitement doesn’t put a strain on the environment:

Reuse your decor from last year

I know it can be tempting to go shopping for new ornaments and stockings every year. I can relate, since we’ve been using the same silver and white ornaments and tired tree skirt for about 4 years now. But there are ways to create a new look without shopping for new decor.

Buy craft paint and change the color of some of your ornaments.

Try using a string of white lights instead of multi-colored.

Wrap those candle holders in some festive ribbon.

Personalize some of your ornaments with monograms.

I actually saw this one on HGTV’s 24-Hour Design yesterday. If you have plain glass bulb ornaments that are either white or transparent, get a couple of small bottles of non-toxic craft paint in a variety of colors from your nearest craft store. Take the cap off the top, and squeeze a few drops of 2 colors inside the bulb. Use your finger to cover the opening and shake the bulb until the colors mix and cover the inside of the entire bulb. You have a “new” ornament, and a great, simple craft project.

Hold an ornament swap

If you’re really bored with your holiday decor, you can be sure that at least a few of your friends and family members feel the same way. A few weeks before Christmas, organize an ornament swap. Have everyone put together a box or container with all the items they no longer want. Trade amongst the group to create a whole new look without buying any new products. This can apply to ornaments as well as stockings, tree skirts, candle holders, garlands, wreaths and any other holiday decor you and think of.

Make your own decor

Your kitchen and back yard are great places to start when you want to make your own ornaments.

String popcorn (unsalted and with no butter) to create a festive, natural garland

Collect fallen pine cones and decorate them with paint and other items

Stick with sustainable or Fair Trade products

If you are going to buy new holiday decor, try to stick with ornaments made of recycled, natural and sustainable materials. Recycled glass ornaments are easy to come by if you take the time to look at the packaging. There are also ornaments made of recycled cardboard or metals, organic cotton, bamboo, reclaimed wood, and more. Here are some options:

Go with eco-friendly textiles

Hanging stockings on the mantel is a holiday tradition that most families love, and a Christmas tree just isn’t complete without a beautiful skirt. While it may be tempting to pick up those inexpensive polyester or plastic options in the aisles of every big box store, they aren’t exactly easy on the Earth. There are much greener ways to dress your home:

Make your own. Stockings can be made from old t-shirts, sheets or towels. Let the kids decorate them with non-toxic paints and glitter glue. And in a tip from reader Rebecca of the Little House on Northwood, use a bunch of cloth napkins in festive colors to create a unique tree skirt. Simply overlap them going all the way around the tree. Not pictured.
