Kitchen

As much as we have tried to make our entire lifestyle greener, there is one area where we (more specifically: me) have always struggled — our diet. I am a lazy cook, when I feel like cooking at all, so convenience foods have been my crutch for a long time. I know we can do better. One of the things we’re trying to do is eat more fresh, non-packaged, organic foods. In this video, we’ve found a really easy way to support local growers, and I’ll show you how you can do the same.

It always surprises new visitors to my home to learn that we never buy paper towels. I guess it’s just habit for most people to ask for them after washing their hands, but it’s literally been years since my husband or I have bought a roll. This didn’t happen overnight. Eliminating paper towels and napkins was definitely a process, but it was a necessary step toward reducing the amount of waste in our kitchen.

Our goal is eventually to have no waste at all leaving the kitchen, which tends to be the room where most of our household trash is produced.

I enjoy the occasional sci fi movie just as much as the next guy, but you won’t see me at any Star Trek conventions any time soon. Still, I couldn’t help but  be enamored with this flying saucer bowl set by Museum of Robots. It’s geeky, but not in the pocket protector and bi-focal wearing sort of way. More in a really quirky, modern, “where did you get that?!” sort of way.

Home Fashion Statement: Stardust Recycled Tile

I don’t have a whole lot of experience with big remodeling jobs like kitchens or bathrooms, but I know beautiful tilework when I see it. As soon as I saw the recycled glass tile made by Stardust Glass, I knew I’d found something special. Anyone who has been reading this site for any length of time knows that I’m a fan of clean, modern design with a little bit of eclectic personality thrown in, and I love, love, love patterns made from graphic geometric shapes. All of these could be used to describe Stardust tile.

Anyone who knows me knows that I like eye candy. I love being surrounded by beautiful things. When it comes to the home, many of those beautiful things are purely decorative. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but one of the challenges I have placed on myself is to find decorative objects that are either meaningful to me in some way (think family photos or artwork) or that serve a purpose. This Puzzle Pieces serving board, found via my friends over at Young House Love, is the latter. It is a cutting board and a serving piece in one.
