I love Kate Quinn Organic clothes. It is my go-to brand for my daughter, because I know I can trust that the fabrics will be soft, comfy organic cotton and that the quality will be impeccable. Apparently, the folks over at Zulily feel the same way! This week, you can grab not just organic clothing for boys and girls, but also organic crib bedding, curtains, pillows and more for up to 60% off!

The colors and patterns are amazing and as appropriate for a grown-up space as they are for a nursery. The curtains are 84″ long, and if that’s not long enough, you can always add a strip of solid-colored fabric across the bottom. In any case, $45-47 a pair is a great deal for organic window treatments!

Why It’s Green:

Made in the U.S. of organic cotton

Fair Trade-certified

Price: $12.99-59.99

NOTE: If you’re not yet a member of Zulily, you’ll have to sign up to take advantage of this sale. Signing up is free. If you make a purchase after signing up via my link, I will receive a small site credit to shop at Zulily.

This week is a good one for green decorators who’d like to save some money without sacrificing their conscience.

Environment Furniture is available at Gilt Groupe for up to 50% off. Their prices reflect that quality, and this is a great opportunity to save on these big ticket items. You’ll find sofas, bedroom furniture, dining tables, coffee and end tables, chairs and more, all made of sustainable materials.

Like many other folks, during this time of year, I tend to do a lot of reorganizing and purging. If you’re in a similar situation, you’ll be happy to know that these deals will allow you to get these already affordable storage pieces for even better prices.

Way Basics at Totsy

Get Way Basics’ eco-friendly, recycled paper furniture for up to 40% off at Totsy. What I love most about Way Basics and their unique Z-Boards is that they are infinitely customizable. While the cubes are perfect as-is for small-scale storage, you can connect as many of them as you’d like to create a much larger piece that fits your space. In the photo below, you can see how I used them in my daughter’s room to create kid-sized storage for her books and toys, as well as a corner reading bench.

It may be hard to believe that these pieces are made of recycled paper, but indeed, they are. And they’re strong and durable to boot. As long as you’re not planning to jump up and down on top of them, they should have no problem handling your typical storage needs. The sale ends Feb. 10, 2011 at 10 a.m. EST.

Price: $24-42 (down from $39.99-69.99)

NOTE: If you’re not yet a member of Totsy, you must sign up to take advantage of this deal. Signing up is free. To find the sale, visit Totsy and scroll down the home page until you see the Way Basics banner.
Green Lullaby at Gilt Groupe

Like Way Basics, Green Lullaby storage pieces are made of recycled paper — more specifically recycled cardboard. While they’re not quite as versatile as Way Basics, they’re still a great option when you need some extra storage in a child’s room or even your living room. In addition to their storage cube set, shown above, their bench, doll cradle and table are also up for sale. The sale ends Feb. 12, 2011 at midnight EST.

Price: $22-36 (down from $44-69)

NOTE: If you’re not yet a member of Gilt Groupe, you must sign up to take advantage of these deals.

I am starting to get the itch again. You know — the one that makes you want to redo every room in the house. We finished my daughter’s room last April, and I can’t help but feeling like it’s time for a change. Of course, because we’re renters, the end of our lease is always looming to remind me that it might not be worth the effort to do a whole new design. Still, I want to do something to freshen up her room, and these cute marionette pillows and prints by Ferm Living have given me a ton of ideas.

The whimsical illustrations are done marionette style, and the characters even have names: Aristo Katt, Mr. Frank Fox, Elle Elephant and Posey Panda. They are part of Ferm’s Darling Clementine collection, and I think they would be fabulous in a child’s room or nursery, and I could even picture them in the office of a graphic designer or other creative. They are fun, but not necessarily childish. And I want at least one

Nurseries and kids’ rooms are so much fun to decorate that I almost wish we’d have another baby just so I’d have a nursery to decorate. Yes. It really is that serious

You can get away with whimsical design elements and themes in kids’ room that might not be appropriate in adult spaces (though I’m just adventurous enough to try them anyway). This organic, polka dotted bedding from the Land of Nod is playful enough for a little girl or boy, but it also could work for a teenager or even in a guest room. The patterns are fun, but because they are tone-on-tone in deep shades pink and blue, they’re more sophisticated than something of the the baby blue or powder pink variety.

And as you can see in the first photo, the two colors are beautiful when used in the same room, in the even you have a boy and a girl who share one. Both colors are available in twin and full/queen. The same pattern is also available in crib bedding, and the Land of Nod carries matching solid color organic cotton curtain panels.

Call me crazy, but I am in love with these little animal figurines from Etsy seller enormouschampion! I found the fox first, but it didn’t take long for me to fall for the kangaroo, squirrels and love birds (y’all KNOW how much I love birds ). I think they’d be incredibly cute in a nursery or child’s room, and I’d love to have the company of a fox or kangaroo while sitting at my desk all day. And I DO need a paperweight (how come noone ever told me that Kindergarten comes with tons of paper brought home daily?)

Anyway, for $80, I may have to admire Mr. Fox from afar, but at a more reasonable $30, the love birds would make a great addition to my dresser.

There are probably very few people who shop online and don’t know about Gilt Groupe. It is an online-only retailer that offers typically high-end products for seriously reduced prices, but only for a limited time. The sales typically last 24-96 hours, so if you see something you need (not want), you need to act fast. This is one of the cases when Gilt Groupe is not just offering eco-friendly products, but products that could really help anyone setting up a nursery or a room for a child do so for a significantly reduced cost.

A wide range of Argington’s gorgeous eco-friendly products are on sale, including:

BEST DEAL

Sahara Crib, Changing Table & 2 Dressers: Available as a 4 piece set in Red Maple for $1,129 ($2470 retail: Absolutely the BEST deal). This set is the same as the one shown in the second image above, though that one is a different color (Ebony). NOTE: The Ebony 4-piece set is already sold out, so I expect this set to sell out fast as well, particularly because the crib is not available by itself. I also haven’t seen the Red Maple color anywhere else.

OTHER PIECES

Sahara Changer in Ebony (shown at top): $422

Sahara Dresser in Ebony (shown at top): $298

Ayres Rolling Trundle Bed: $225 ($360 retail). NOTE: Twin bed is already sold out.

Ayres Bed Guards: $48 ($85 retail)

Organic Twin Reversible Quilts in 2 colorways: $52 ($95 retail)

Organic Reversible Sheet Sets in 3 colorways: $57 ($115 retail)

Organic Reversible Boudoir Pillows: $14 ($28 retail)

Organic Twin Pillowcase & Duvet Sets in 2 colorways: $47 ($95 retail)

Organic Reversible 4-piece Crib Bedding Set: $90 ($185 retail)

For each item, you’re looking at 50% savings or more. It’s really worth it if you are expecting a baby or know an expectant mother. I think the nursery is the one room in the home where I wouldn’t hesitate to spend more in order to make it completely eco-friendly with no toxins to affect my baby, but Gilt Groupe has made it so you really don’t have to spend much at all.

Even if you already have furniture and simply need bedding, this is a great deal to take advantage of while it lasts. The Argington sale ends at noon Sept. 19, or whenever all the products are sold out. Several are already gone or only available via the waiting list.

Why It’s Green:

Bedding and textiles made of organic cotton

Furniture made of sustainably harvested birch and finished with zero-VOC, non-toxic stains and finishes

How to Buy:

If you’re not already a member of Gilt Groupe, you’ll have to sign up. Once you’ve registered and signed in, mouse over “HOME” in the top navigation menu, then click on Argington Furniture, which should be the very first link.

(aff): If you sign up for Gilt Group via my invitation link, I will receive a $25 site credit if you make a purchase.

It happens to the best of us. We’ll start a project or begin decorating a room, only to let it fall by the wayside because of the one or two small tasks we were unable to finish. The smallest space in our home, and the one I use the most often, fell victim to this: My office space. But I’m determined to finish it, and soon.

I bought a lamp base at Goodwill months ago, and I had been looking for a suitable shade to go with it. I found several I liked on Etsy, but I didn’t want to spend more than $50 on it. In fact, I was hoping to spend considerably less than that. I also wanted one that wasn’t made of polyester or plastic, and that featured some sort of pattern or design — and I wasn’t in the mood to make one myself.

With all these requirements, its no wonder I couldn’t find one that worked.

A few days ago, though, I finally found a shade that fit all of my criteria. Even more surprising, I found it at Walmart.com. The lamp shades shown above are made of organic cotton with AZO-free dyes. They are technically designed for use in a nursery, but I think they are stylish enough to be used in other rooms as well.

All I know is that the soft blue shade is the right color and the pattern is perfect, so it will be going on my desk.

I have spent months with baby fever, in part because so many of my blogging friends recently had or are having babies and I wanted to remember what it felt like again. Sending my daughter off to kindergarten only multiplied that effect, although I wonder how wise it is to wish for an infant now that the house is finally quiet in the daytime…lol. Still, I find myself intrigued by all things baby, so these deals definitely caught my attention. First up is the gorgeous bedding set by Ferm Living shown above. It is crib sized, but most experts do not recommend putting a duvet in a crib with a sleeping infant, so it would probably best be used on a toddler bed. It comes with a pillow case and duvet in a matching storage bag.

A little while back when we finished my daughter’s room, you might remember that there was a blank spot on one side of the room that was waiting for something special: custom-built Owyn toy box donated by Mod Mom Furniture. Well, Owyn is here, and I can unequivocally say that he was well worth the wait.

Previously, all of Ja’Naya’s larger toys were housed inside a large, blue plastic bin that we acquired sometime over the past few years in one of our moves. It was functional, but it was hideous — which is why I kept it hidden away as much as possible. Owyn, on the other hand, will live proudly next to the wall we like to call the “art gallery.” Here he is in the context of the whole room:

From the product photos, it is hard to tell, but Owyn has two compartments — not the one large compartment I was expected. I would’ve realized this had I read the product description more thoroughly, but alas, I didn’t. This means that Ja’Naya’s toy piano will have to find another home (probably on a shelf in the closet), but most of the other toys fit comfortably. It is really short and squat — the perfect height for a child. And since that wall is the only spot in the room with an exposed outlet for a night light, the height is also perfect in that the outlet isn’t covered up, so we don’t have to move the toy box at night.

Overall, we LOVE this toy box. And knowing that it was made by the hands of a mother who loves the Earth as much as I do makes it that much sweeter!

If you want a Mod Mom toy box, keep in mind that it will come with a wait. Because Kiersten makes each one by hand, they generally take 8-11 weeks to be shipped. But like I said, it was worth the wait.

Why It’s Green:

Handmade to order of sustainable Baltic Birch plywood from Russia (E1 Certified)

Finished with non-toxic paints from Pittsburgh Paints (inside and leaf lids) and non-toxic, low-VOC water-based polyurethane from Deft

Price: $399

(Sponsored opp): This toy box was donated as part of a room redesign project. The opinions are 100% my own.

I’d venture to say that nursery decorating is one of the most enjoyable household tasks a woman can do. It tends to be easier than other rooms, because you’re generally starting from scratch instead of trying to sort through years worth of stuff. And even if you already have the major pieces, like a crib, rocking chair, etc., making it a unique space for your little one to play and grow is a great feeling. And so I completely understand the drive to make a nursery not just gorgeous, but completely organic and non-toxic and safer for an infant. So by my estimation, organic crib bedding is the only way to go. And this organic crib bedding from EGG? Let’s just say it almost makes me want to have a little egg of my own.

These products were completely new to me, which was an unexpected surprise, given that I tend to see a lot of repetition in product selection as I go from green store to green store. These crib sets are gorgeous, featuring fun, kid-friendly motifs like chicks, balloons and an animal parade. But unlike most crib bedding with these types of themes, which — let’s be honest here — tend to be pretty cheesy, these are sweet and sophisticated at the same time. And more importantly, they are all organic, which is one of the best ways to give your baby a great start in life.

If you don’t green any other room in your home, definitely aim to make your nursery as eco-friendly as possible, keeping air quality and exposure to potential toxins in mind. It’s a decision you’ll never regret. And of course you don’t have to spend nearly $400 on crib bedding to do so, but these sets were just too gorgeous to pass up!

Why It’s Green:

Made of organic cotton

Filled with recycled, formaldehyde-free filling

My daughter is four years old, so she’s at the age when she’s learning how to read and tell time. Thanks to the poster hanging in her room from MadeByGirl, “love” was the first word she learned how to spell. Because of this, I realized that I have the opportunity to use her room decor not only to surround her with beautiful things, but with items she can learn from. Sure, the clock and alphabet poster from the dollar store are functional, but they aren’t exactly a work of art, and they certainly are not made of sustainable materials.

Here is some of my favorite beautiful, educational and sustainable kids’ decor:

1. Bamboo Clocks by Decoylab: Teach them how to tell time in the most stylish way with these modern clocks. Made in the U.S. of sustainable bamboo. Price: $48-68 (aff)

2. My Favorite Things poster by Petit Collage: Now THIS is an alphabet poster I can learn to love! It is available in two color schemes — pink/orange and blue — so your favorite little one can learn in style with whichever colors best match your decor. Printed in Portland, OR with soy-based inks on 100% recycled paper. Price: $30 (aff)

3. Periodic Table Shower Curtain: This is definitely a bit much for my preschooler, but if you have older children, this is a great reminder of a science lesson we’ve all had to learn. Made of EVA, which is technically still vinyl, but is a much safer alternative to PVC. Price: $30 (aff)

4. Letter Lights by Perch: What kid doesn’t want to see their name in lights? In this case, they’d at least get their initial, unless your child has a really short name or you have a really big budget Handmade in Brooklyn, NY of ceramic. Price: $110

5. Dr. Seuss organic bedding from Pottery Barn Kids: Remind them of their favorite storybook characters with this sweet unisex bedding. Sleeping with Horton and Sam I Am is bound to make them want to read. Made of organic cotton and Oeko-Tex certified. Price: $23-114

6. Multibox by Green Lullaby: Your child may love their toy blocks, but these particular blocks will make mom and dad happy too. They’re great for kid-friendly storage that could double as seating, and the bold colors and educational motifs will foster learning. Made of recycled cardboard, 100% recyclable and finished with non-toxic water-based paints and adhesives. Price: $59.99 for a set of 3

7. EnviroBanks: They have to save money at some point, and in this economy, that’s a lesson that will go a long way. Ditch the cheap plastic piggy banks in favor of a more sustainable — and stylish — option. Available as a cow, kangaroo, koala or panda. Made of wood from sustainably-managed plantations with non-toxic glues and dyes and recycled packaging. Price: $24.75

8. Pillow Talk Collection by Alexandra Ferguson: This pillows will teach, and constantly remind, your kids of some important, sometimes tongue-in-cheek life lessons. If you’re like me and most other parents, you’re probably ready to scoop up that “No Whining” pillow right now. That’s a lesson my daughter could stand to see on a regular basis Handmade of 100% recycled felt. Price: $45-119

The most important lesson in all of these items, however, is the one that they share in common — that we must each do our part to make this Earth a safer and more beautiful place to live.

I’ve realized something. Looking at individual furnishings is great, but it tends to be more inspirational to see these items in a room that is fully put together. That, and I just love drooling over photos of beautifully decorated rooms All of this is to introduce a new feature here at Green Your Decor: Friday Room Reveal. Every Friday, I will leave you for the weekend with a beautiful, eco-friendly, finished room to admire. Some will be from readers and regular people just like you and I, and others will be from bona fide interior designers. Hopefully, this will inspire you to finish your own rooms with eco-friendly decor and submit them to be featured. As soon as I finish my own rooms, I’ll show you those too

Without further adieu, here are the details for this week’s room: reader Kerri’s nursery for her little girl, Arabella. In Kerri’s words:

I’m an avid reader of your blog and would like to submit my daughter’s eco-friendly nursery to be featured on the site. Almost everything in the room is organic and/or eco-friendly. We live in a rental apartment, so we could not control the paint or wall to wall carpeting. However, we live in a green building so those materials are likely less toxic than in a traditional apartment building. We spent so many hours and months trying to create a truly non-toxic, yet beautiful, space for our daughter. It’s nice to know we succeeded!

I’ve been running into great deals on green nursery furnishings left and right. Maybe it’s a sign that my baby fever is turning into self-fulfilling prophecy. As much as I like that idea, right now it’s probably best that I stick to dreaming. Still, the great deals on this eco-friendly crib and high chair don’t help. The twin bed is equally as beautiful, so I’ll keep my eyes on that piece for the daughter I already have.

These prices wouldn’t exactly qualify as bargain basement, but as quality eco-friendly furniture goes, these are pretty good. It’s not uncommon to see this type of furniture priced in the thousands of dollars.

The high chair is available in pink or cherry.

Why It’s Green:

The birch wood used in Argingnton’s furniture is harvested from sustainably managed forests

All materials, glues, stains and finishes are 100% non-toxic and are low VOC

Price: $108.90-490 (down from $198-635)

I go to the extreme when I create my Green Rooms in a Box, insisting that every item included has some eco-friendly qualities whenever I can help it. Apparently, I’m not the only one who goes to these lengths to create green rooms.

At the ABC Kids Expo, the Greenguard Environmental Institute debuted a nursery decorated only with products certified by the organization as having minimal effect on indoor air quality. I know it’s just a trade show booth, but isn’t the result gorgeous? Click on the images to see larger versions.

The room with decorated with products from the following companies:

Flooring: Anderson Hardwood Floors

Furniture: QCollection Junior, Rubbermaid, Stanley Furniture, Teknion, Bernhardt Design and Herman Miller

Mattress: Naturepedic

Paints & Coatings: AkzoNobel and Sherwin Williams

Textiles: Knoll

Window Treatments: Eclipse Shutters

I told you guys I have babies on the brain. This. Does. Not. Help.
