I’m finally getting back into the swing of doing Green Rooms in a Box, with a new twist: I will select one item that inspires the look of whole room. It could be a painting, a vase, a blanket, or whatever. This first one is inspired by Viva Terra’s Butaca Chair, an eco-friendly take on the classic Barcelona chair. I love the lines and even the rustic coffee sack upholstery. For this room, I let the upholstery guide me — and this is where I wound up.

11. Bamboo Plush Rug from Viva Terra, 8 x 10, red   |  $965  |  Made of bamboo. When used in this form, it’s eco-friendliness is questionable, as the process used to turn bamboo into fabric fibers is chemical intensive. I’m still trying to find a plush wool alternative.

Green Room in a Box: Warm, Worldly Living Room

I’ve been having a blast decking out Ja’Naya’s new room with the help of some wonderful in-kind sponsors. It’s killing me that I can’t reveal the whole room just yet, but I’m waiting for a couple of key components that will really complete the look, so you’ll have to wait just a little bit longer.

A Sneak Peek of Ja’Naya’s New Room…on Facebook

Today’s Green Room in a Box is part of a special project that is really near and dear to me. My family has been through a lot in the last several months since my daughter’s diagnosis, but none of us have been through more than Ja’Naya herself. She is doing really well with her treatment and handling it like a trooper, but my husband and I wanted to do something special for her to help ease the transition. Next week, my family is moving to be closer to her doctors, and we decided to completely redecorate her room (in eco-friendly fashion, of course) so she’ll have a special place to play and relax, especially after long days at the clinic.

I reached out to several sponsors, who were more than happy to help us do this makeover by donating product. All those sponsors are designated below as “In-Kind Sponsors” (meaning they donated product to the project).

Inspiration Room

The image above was my inspiration for the room. It has been in my inspiration folder on my computer for a while, and for the life of me, I can’t remember where I got it, but I’ve always loved this room! If anyone recognizes it, please let me know so I can link back to the original site. We don’t plan to paint (although that could change), so I love the fact that this room is vibrant and happy even with white walls. I also loved the uber-organized storage system surrounding the bed, complete with a comfy-looking bench. Though we chose a completely different color scheme, we hope to accomplish a similar look. When that turned up nothing I liked, bought a cheap mirror from TJ Maxx and painted it, only have it completely fall apart the next day (no joke). Then I remembered this wood-based peel-and-stick starburst that I found via the Friday Room Reveal from reader and photographer Kelli Taylor. It is made in the US., and it is absolutely gorgeous! These small but functional hooks will give her a  place to hang her coat, backpack and even her guitar when she’s not using them.

8. Upholstered Tufted Headboard |  About $150 total  |  I made this baby last weekend, and I’ll share all the details in a tutorial post soon!

9. A part of me can’t help but feel like something is missing. Green Room in a Box: Mid-Mod Bedroom (sponsored by Amenity)

I mentioned a couple of times that my husband and I are finally getting ready to move into our own place. After 2 years of living with family, it is a welcome change. Lotus Pillows from Inhabit | $60/ea., $240 for 4 | Handprinted with eco-friendly inks and handmade in the U.S. of recycled polyester in a zero-waste production process | You know how I love my Inhabit pillows. The Lotus pillows in gray and sunshine, front and back, are exactly what the doctor ordered to perfectly tie in my color palette. Still, I’ll readily admit that buying 4 of them constitutes a splurge for me. (aff)

Green Rooms in a Box: My Living Room Plan Under $1500

I’ve been excited about bringing this Green Room in a Box from an idea to reality ever since I first posted it. It’s amazing how easy it is to get sidetracked on a decorating project. If it took my husband and I 2 months long to complete a patio makeover, I can imagine how long it would have taken us to do a kitchen!

To be fair, we wound up making cosmetic changes that we hadn’t anticipated, like buying bags and bags of mulch to prettify the planting beds and just generally make the front of the house look a lot better. That blew a giant hole in our original budget, so it took us longer than expected to re-budget for all the accessories we wanted to get. Coincidentally though, my mother returned from the Virgin Islands yesterday, so we were able to do the “big reveal” for her before I do it here for you, and I’m happy to say that she loved it! Just so you’ll remember where we started, the original “before” photo is shown above. Most of the items we planned during the Green Room in a Box reveal did end up in the final design, with a couple of exceptions.  So here’s the final shopping list and some notes:

1. Radiance Imperial Matchstick Rollup Shade from Walmart | $34.88/ ea.; $69.76 for 2 | Made of bamboo. I hand-painted the flowers I originally envisioned onto the shades. What do you think of the result? I plan to post a tutorial on Monday.
2. Recycled Green Lemonade Carafe and Glass 5-Piece Set from Walmart | $19.98 | Made of recycled glass.
3. 3 Piece Acacia Bistro Set with Cushions from Walmart | $148 | Made of FSC-certified acacia wood.
4. Coir Coastal Doormat from Target | $14.99 | Made of coir, which comes from discarded coconut husks |  We changed the color scheme of the room, so this one no longer made sense. We also wanted one that was a little bit more affordable, so we opted for this simple, but colorful design from Target.
5. Solar Lights from Walmart | $4/ea.; $16 for 4 | Solar-powered | They aren’t shown in the photo because we haven’t yet figured out how to actually get them to work, but we did buy them (Not available at Walmart.com; Only in stores)
6. Sheraton Low Deep Seating Chair from Walmart | $146/ea.; $292 for 2 | Made of FSC-certified Eucalyptus wood.
7. Plantation Patterns Outdoor Pillows from Home Depot |  $12.49/ea.;  $37.47 for 3 | The pillows we originally wanted from Sears were no longer available when I finally went to order them, so we got these from Home Depot instead. The online price is $30 for a set of 2, but in the store, we paid $12.49 per pillow. And remember how I said I couldn’t find any eco-friendly outdoor pillows? On Monday, I’ll reveal how I did find some…2 days after I had bought these pillows and all the matching accessories
8. Plastic Planters | As I mentioned my mom had 2 of these for a few years. We painted them and added flowers to really spruce up the space. And as you can see, we added lots of other potted plants, herbs and flowers. Actually, my husband did. I may have the eye for the design, but I do NOT have a green thumb
9. Recycled Plastic Sunburst Rug from Bambeco  |  $35  |  Made of recycled plastic  |  As soon as I saw this rug and how beautifully it coordinated with the pillows we chose, I had to have it! In the product photo on the Bambeco site, the rug looks purple. In person with an up-close view, it looks purple because the rug is made of a combination of red and blue woven plastic. TOTAL: $633.20 | The final cost is about $20 higher than it was originally intended to be, and with supplies (a few cans of spray paint and a small paint sample, a pair of hedge clippers, etc.), the total cost (excluding the mulch) is probably right at $700. Not bad, eh?

So what do you think of the final design? We still plan to paint the front door black (if my mother will let us) and stain the concrete patio so it looks like the discoloration is on purpose…lol. Leave your compliments comments below!

Green Rooms in a Box Series: Eco-Friendly Man Cave Under $5000

Today’s Room: This Green Room in a Box is special to me. As one of Walmart’s ElevenMoms, I had an opportunity to purchase up to $600 worth of patio furniture and accessories to create an outdoor living space.  Of course, I wanted said furniture to be eco-friendly. Thankfully, and to my surprise, Walmart.com has a pretty decent selection of FSC-certified wood furniture. I added to that some bamboo and recycled glass accessories from Walmart and elsewhere, and I am giving my mom’s front patio a makeover. Below, you’ll see the before pictures. I have ordered the furniture, to be shipped directly to my local Walmart via Site to Store. When I receive it, my husband will spend a few days putting everything together. So for the first time, you’ll be able to see how a Green Room in a Box looks in real life! Are you as excited as I am?

TOTAL: $618.21 | Pretty good budget to gain an outdoor living room since the space is rarely used right now. And there’s a little wiggle room in the budget for the recycled iron wall art I’m envisioning on one wall and for the flowers.

This is what the patio looks like now. The red Georgia clay has done quite a number on the concrete, so we’ll have to scrub it, probably with some peroxide. The bamboo blinds will be used to cover up the nook/storage area that you can see on the left side of the second photo. And I’m hoping to get a large piece of art made of recycled iron from a local metalworker for the wall next to the window.  Any other ideas for how we can brighten up the space? Green Rooms in a Box Series: Hot, Valentine-Ready Master Bedroom

When I was working on reader Dan’s eco-friendly bonus room, I remembered how much I loved doing the Green Rooms in a Box series. So I plan on doing a room at least once every other week, which was the plan once the original series ended. According to the results of the Green Your Decor reader survey thus far, all of you like the rooms as much as I love putting them together. But I’m stumped for what room I should do next.

So I’m turning to my great readers for ideas. What room would you like to see me do next week? A fabulous master bedroom? A room based on a color theme or a budget? Leave your ideas in the comments below. I’ll pick one and turn it into a fabulous room design next Wednesday. I’ll also thank the reader who leaves the winning comment.

Which Green Room in a Box should I tackle next?

Dan, one of my regular readers, was the winner of the Green Room in a Box giveaway waaaay back in October. I know…it’s taken me a while, but with the move and everything else going on, I had to put my designer’s hat on again Dan has an awkward bonus room/loft space at the top of the stairs in his home. Click the image at left for a full-size view of the way it looks now.

It is currently used as a play area for the kids, but Dan wanted a more luxurious space that has a real purpose. He also wanted me to stick to a budget of $500-1000 with mostly used pieces. That was quite a challenge, but thanks to Craigslist, I was able to find everything I needed to turn this undefined space into an elegant sitting area with room for the kids.

2. Large-scale map | FREE | This map is already in Dan’s room. I suggest that he put it in a more substantial frame, similar to the one shown in the inset. A great way to do this on the cheap is to measure your existing art. Then head to your local thrift store and try to find a framed piece of art in a frame you like in the same size.

However, Dan mentioned that he wanted to replace a low wall in his room with a wrought iron railing, so this would be a perfect complement to that.

The Green Rooms in a Box series has been very well-received, with lots of readers expressing their admiration for it. Though it can be time consuming to find all the products to go into a room that is all green, I love doing it. So I want to challenge myself and reward my awesome, loyal readers at the same time. Here goes nothing:

I’m going to create an eco-friendly room plan for one lucky reader. To make it clear, you’ll be winning the room design plan — not the products to go in it.  I’ll do any room you want: living room, bedroom, office, playroom…whatever. I’ll work within the budget you set, and it can be a real budget or an imaginary one. To be fair, realize that if your budget is very low, your room will consist of reusing many of your current furnishings or shopping on Craigslist. I’ll do my best to stay true to your design preferences. You like shabby chic? I’ll honor it. Ultra contemporary? I’ll honor it. Here’s your chance to have the eco-friendly room of your dreams designed.
