Dan, one of my regular readers, was the winner of the Green Room in a Box giveaway waaaay back in October. I know…it’s taken me a while, but with the move and everything else going on, I had to put my designer’s hat on again

I’ve always wanted my bathroom to be a spa-like environment, but it’s hard to accomplish that wish a cheap plastic trash can and uninspiring bath decor. Most of our bathroom accessories are packed away in storage, but since we bought them years ago, it is a safe bet that they are both outdated and far from eco-friendly. The stylish, sustainable Acacia waste can and tank tray from CB2.com would definitely be a better option, both for the planet and for my decor.
We’re short on space where we currently live, but in previous houses and apartments where there was more breathing room, we almost always wound up having one awkwardly unused corner in at least one room. You know…the place where the entertainment center doesn’t quite fill up the wall or where the side table didn’t quite fit. These awkward and often tight spots are the perfect place for a tall, narrow vase like this one from Overstock.com.
They help add interest to the room by adding height, and this particular one pairs light Mitsumata branches with a dark base for beautiful contrast. The vase is made of recycled wood fibers, and with the branches, the entire arrangement is 5.5 feet tall.
My husband knows how much I like eclectic art and accessories. We have African masks and shadow boxes filled with handmade trinkets, and I’m typically drawn to colorful art like the Obama print I featured yesterday. But something tells me he might be a little freaked out if I brough home this recycled glass head from Pier 1. I love stepping out on a limb and doing something that’s a little different and a lot unexpected, but I think if this were in my home, I’d feel like its blank eyes were following me around the room.
In honor of the newly sworn in President Obama, I scoured Etsy.com for handmade Obama housewares. I cheated, since most of them aren’t made of specifically eco-friendly materials. But for this historic occasion, all of us could use a little Obama memorabilia to help us remember how far we have come as a nation. So here’s some handmade Obamarama for your enjoyment!
1. Obama print from Emcee
This 8.5 x 11 print was inspired by inauguration day and is delivered in a protective envelope. It is inspirational and straight up awesome — much like the man himself. Price: $30

Green Your Decor was borne of frustration in my attempts to find eco-friendly housewares that were also beautiful, and inspiration to do something to reduce my own carbon footprint and help others do the same in a beautiful way.
