A few weeks ago, I introduced you to the Sylvania Earth Day Challenge, 40 for the Future. If you haven’t yet, head over to the challenge website and take a look at the small changes we can all make that will save up to 40 million Kwh of energy between now and Earth Day. Then make your pledge! If all of us work together, we can put a big dent in our monthly energy usage. It’s really eye-opening how small, simple changes can have such a tremendous impact!

When I came up with the idea to redecorate my daughter’s bedroom, I knew I wanted it to be something special. Nothing to complicated or sophisticated for a little girl, but not cookie cutter either. And since I’ve been wanting to try my hand at making an upholstered headboard, I figured this was the perfect opportunity. So without further adieu, here’s a step-by-step tutorial for making an upholstered, tufted headboard of your own. If you prefer not to tuft, ignore step 2 and stop at step 6.

Supplies

  • Plywood (opt for FSC certified or reclaimed if you can help it)

Last week, I introduced you to the Sylvania Earth Day Challenge, 40 for the Future. If you haven’t yet, head over to the challenge website and take a look at the small changes we can all make that will save up to 40 million Kwh of energy between now and Earth Day. Then make your pledge! And if you can believe it, so many people have pledged to make changes that we’ve already hit more than 400,000,000 Kwh saved, blowing the original goal out of the water! In other words, even if only 10% of those people who pledged actually make the changes, we’ll still reach the goal. It’s really eye-opening how small, simple changes can have such a tremendous impact!

Lately, I’ve been more than a little obsessed with the idea of stylish storage. Having to pack up a whole house will do that to you. It makes you take stock of just how much stuff you have and what you really NEED. And although we purged quite a bit, donating what is likely thousands of dollars worth of items that were just taking up space, we’re still going to have to get creative about storing the essentials since we’re moving into a smaller apartment. This art box storage bench is a good candidate to store all the family games and art supplies that we keep in the living room.

I am regularly inspired by decorating duo Sherry & John Petersik of Young House Love. However, it is pretty rare that I can put that inspiration to good use in my own home. So after my search for fun, organic window treatments for Ja’Naya’s room turned up only solid curtains and drapes, I decided I’d look for an organic fabric instead, and make the curtains myself. Except for one little detail. I’d never done it before. Ever. That, and I don’t own a sewing machine — yet. So imagine my joy when Sherry and John shared the steps behind their no-sew curtains!
