How Green Is Your Home?

How Green Is Your Home

As the concept of “going green” gets bigger and bigger, there will be lots of skeptics who will argue that individual changes won’t make a difference, and that this is all just a fad that will pass in time. Well, I found a great tool to help all of us determine the impact of all the changes we have made in our homes.

The How Green is Your Home calculator from Low Impact Living takes into account a variety of factors, including the size and type of your home (single family, apartment, etc.), the size of the lot your home is on, the number of people in your household, the age of your appliances and how often you use them and more.

It doesn’t go as far as asking whether you have Energy Star appliances or have used eco-friendly materials in the building and furnishing of your home, so it’s not foolproof or completely accurate. But it does give us an idea how all the little things we may not think of impact our environmental footprints.

It also makes suggestions for reducing your impact, like installing low-flow showerheads and compact flourescent light bulbs. Some of these suggestions are more extensive than others, but they are very comprehensive. You also have the option of saving your score and list so that you can check off the suggestions as they are completed.
About 2 years ago my home roof was replaced by Roofco company and next year the electricity bill was lower. So it was a good investment.

Complete energy dependence is what I believe every home, including my own, should strive towards. This calculator is just one tool to help us get there.
