Ideal Working Conditions: The ‘Life’ Chair

Life Chair by Formway Design for Knoll - Lumbar Support

I spend a lot of time sitting in a chair in front of my computer. The one I have now is admittedly not very comfortable. I end up with kinks in my neck and knots in places I never knew could hurt. So I’m planning on donating or giving away the current chair and starting my hunt for a new one. If you’ve ever bought a really good, ergonomic office chair, you’ll know they aren’t going to come cheap. So I figure, if I’m going to spend hundreds of dollars on a chair, it darn well better be environmentally friendly too. Also I plan to replace my HVAC system, I think I hire for this replacement.

I’m making a list as I find good candidates, and the Life Chair by Formway Design for Knoll is a good contender. It is made of recycled materials and is itself recyclable, with 80% of the parts designed to be disassembled and recycled. And it’s pretty nice to look at, too. It’s available in huge selection of colors, including orange, blue, gray, black and more. You also can customize literally every part of chair, from arms to base, height, back fabric, seat fabric and more. There’s no excuse for you to not get what you want.

The seller calls it a “living seat,” meaning it is designed to reduce pressure points by flexing and shifting with your body weight and movements. Every part of the chair is adjustable for maximum comfort, and you can add optional magnetic lumbar support which attaches anywhere on the back of the chair. I think I’m getting closer to my ideal chair.

Why It’s Green:

  • Made with virtually no harmful VOCs or CFCs
  • Chair utilizes materials with recycled content of 52-64 percent
  • More than 80 percent of Life’s components designed to be recycled for later use
  • GREENGUARD-certified and can help you meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED requirements

Price: $767 (aff)
