The nation`s labour laws apply only where action involves or emerges from a labour dispute. Such a working relationship exists only if a union exists to negotiate on behalf of its members. If these workers effectively renounce the union as representatives of collective agreements – and accept the consequences – and choose to negotiate contracts individually, disputes between workers and their employers will no longer be subject to federal labour law (1042). The right to bargain collectively with an employer strengthens the human dignity, freedom and autonomy of workers by giving them the opportunity to influence the definition of labour rules and thus gain some control over an important aspect of their lives, namely their work… Collective bargaining is not just a tool for pursuing external objectives… Rather, it is an experience as an experience of self-management that is in itself valuable… Collective bargaining enables workers to achieve some form of democracy in the workplace and to guarantee the rule of law in the workplace. Workers gain a voice to influence the definition of rules that control an important aspect of their lives.  If both parties are unable to reach a consensus on the collective agreement, this is described as incongruous in negotiation. Different types of strikes are used to show workers` dissatisfaction with bargaining allowance. An economic strikeA on the basis of discontent over economic conditions. is a strike due to dissatisfaction with economic conditions during contract negotiations. In the summer of 2011, 45,000 Verizon workers gathered when contract negotiations failed.
