Giving ‘Trashy’ a New Meaning: Recycled Step Stool

Padded Recycled Step Stool

As much as I hope to become one of those crafty mavens who can make beautiful adornments for my home out of everyday trash, I have yet to complete (or start) my first project. So for now, my recycling is limited putting #1 and #2 plastic and other recyclables in the bin. Lucky for me, recycling ingenuity comes in many different forms, and this well-executed idea comes dressed in gorgeous Amy Butler fabrics!

This padded step stool is the handmade creation of etsy seller babybloomers. Would you believe its innards are made from half-gallon cardboard cartons and old newspapers, catalogs and junk mail? I wish my trash could look half this good! Babybloomers gives a great description of how it is done on the product page and claims it can hold up to about 150 pounds.

I’m not sure I’d want to take this fabric into the bathroom where we need a step stool the most, but I have another idea for it, especially given that it is available in any of the fabrics shown at the bottom of the photo. When my daughter finally has her own room, I could totally see a couple of these used as toddler-sized seating around a small craft table. If only I could make one myself…

Why It’s Green:

  • Made of 85% recycled materials, including half-gallon cardboard cartons, newspapers, catalogs and junk mail
  • Handmade

Price: $40

These are nice and it is a good idea for the kids. They can even use this as a sitting chair when playing.
